Open up your Iowa approach plates to Waterloo(ALO). The VOR 12, 6, 18, 24, and 36. How come DME is not required to do this approach? How can you decend to the MDH without knowing when you past the LOM? I did the VOR 24 durring my instrument training and it has totally slipped my mind how this approach works. Thanks

Where do you see a LOM on the approach plate?

If you have DME, there is a seperate set of minimums.
Correct. Clearly stated in the minimums section of the plate.

Without DME you would start your decent to MDH upon completing the procedure turn.

Im not looking at the plate at the moment but was aware that there is no LOM, that is part of the reason why i was asking why DME is not required? I should have asked that more clear in the original post. Now i do realize that there are two minimums, one for DME and one without...with NO LOM. Sorry for the confussion but i understand the approach now. Thanks.

??? Apparently you also forgot how to =read= an approach plate since your instrument training.

There usually isn't an LOM on a VOR approach, and there's none here either.

Take that VOR 26. Pretty straightforward VOR approach.

Procedure turn outbound at 2600. Once established inbound, descend to 1540, the MDA if you don't have DME and fly to the MAP, which is co-located with the VOR.

If you have DME, you get a bonus. At 2.4 DME, you can "step down" and use a lower "DME Minimums" with an MAD at 1240 for straight in or 1380 for circling.

About as basic as it gets.

DME is not required because you don't need it to do the approach.

Apparently i did otherwise i wouldnt have asked the question. Thanks for the blow to the balls dude.

Guess ill keep my mouth shut next time i forget something so simple. ;) Thanks for the help.

Sorry. It really wasn't meant that way.

I don't think the guy is a real pilot, not with an attitude like that, definately didn't get very good training thinking a LOM was part of a VOR approach.

midlifeflyer- I just felt that your first line in your first comment was pointless. No harm.

First of all, what point does that play in this topic? Second, Just because someone gets alittle defensive doesnt mean they have a bad attitude. You dont know me or anything about my training so go ahead and assume you know all about it and comment away. To justify my question, I got my instrument rating alittle over a year ago and havent done much flying since. Im about to take an IPC in two weeks and want to be ready for it. So any question i ask (or anyone else) no matter how stupid may be because someone hasnt flown much lately and is alittle rusty. Guess i should have stated that in the first post as well so i wouldnt have had this problem.

Either way, i have recieved more than enough info on the question ask. I appreciate those who have helped out. As i said, i havent had the money to go fly in quite awhile so im alittle rusty on a few things.
