Maybe it looks like a Twin Otter to you, but it was definitely a Partenavia. I remember it well. It WAS being operated outside it's normal envelope, however this pilot had operated this aircraft in a similar routine many times at airshows without incident. I guess he rolled the dice one to many times. And the story of the pilot's wife narrating the airshow routine is also accurate.
Sorry to bring up an old thread. This was not the Plainview TX airshow. The P68C at Plainview was at 250 feet over the runway. When the wings came off it was pitching up. It rolled over on it's back and went behind a hanger. The wife was narrating and when the wings came off she started saying "Oh my god" over and over. She was sobing with a hot microphone until somone turned it off. I was there when it happened. I was based at Reese AFB in Lubbock. The footage everyone saw was from an Amarillo TV station, I believe it was Channel 4.

I want to know the name of the group and song of that music playing in the background....
It is listed above - "Sonne" by Rammstein

The German band, Rammstein, is reportedly named for a terrible accident that occurred at the Ramstein US Air Force base air show in 1988. Three jets from the Italian Air Force crashed while attempting a "pierced heart" maneuver, killing 70 and injuring 400 people. It was a very sad tragedy, but is a somewhat unusual event to name a band for, to me at least. However, the song does a great job of capturing the atmosphere of the most secret and important base in the Scarran Empire. Here are the lyrics to "Sonne" translated in English:

Sonne "Sun"

One, two, three, four, five
six, seven, eight, nine, out

Everybody waits for the light
Scared? - don't be scared!
The sun shines on my eyes
The sun will not set tonight
And the world counts to ten

ONE
Here comes the sun
TWO
Here comes the sun
THREE
It is the brightest star of all
FOUR
Here comes the sun

The sun shines from my hands
She can burn and blind all of you
So if she breaks fists
Heat will be put on the face

The sun will not set tonight
And the world counts to ten

Refrain:

ONE
Here comes the sun
TWO
Here comes the sun
THREE
She is the brightest star of all
FOUR
Here comes the sun

FIVE
Here comes the sun
SIX
Here comes the sun
SEVEN
She is the brightest star of all
EIGHT, NINE
Here comes the sun

The sun shines from my hands
She can burn and blind all of you
So if she breaks fists
Heat will be put on your face
It will hurt you on the chest
As balance is lost
It lets you go down hard when
The world counts to ten

ONE
Here comes the sun
TWO
Here comes the sun
THREE
It is the brightest star of all
FOUR
And from heaven, it shall not fall

FIVE
Here comes the sun
SIX
Here comes the sun
SEVEN
It is the brightest star of all
EIGHT, NINE
Here comes the sun

Creepy for sure. I heard no one was killed in the CH-46 crash off the back of the ship. Anyone confirm?
My favorite was the HUD of the F-15 that did the midair flashing WARNING WARNING! Duh, ya think?

No, bunch of people died on that CH-46. Including some Navy Seals.

That crash was around '95, right? Anyways, I also recall that the pilot had added something (like smoke system) to the wings or wingtips that exacerbated the problem. The video I saw had his wife's commentary on it. Not good.

Osprey crash...huh. What were the odds?   TC

That video listed above was not the crash at Plainview TX. That happened on September 11, 1983. It was a Partenavia P68C. This was the first time he used smoke flares on the wingtips. He lit the flares prior to this maneuver. His wife was his narrator. The problem was he was well over Vne at least 20 kts and estimated 8.3 g's. I doubt the smoke had anything to do with it.

I heard it was force recon marines and only the crewchief made it out.

From a guy at my company who flew 46's, apparently it happened off the west coast.

At first I thought it was an Islander, but I think the guys who suggested a Partenavia were right. Either way, it's a shame.
