Pilotpat, maybe I read the contract wrong but on the reserve schedule, you only have four immovable days off, with the rest of your monthly schedule up in the air. You don't sit by the pager all day but your days off can be moved around to accomodate trips.

imac...I think you probably have better knowledge than me on the full scope of the Reserve Schedule. Didn't you just get hired? I thought I was told by a friend that you basically tell them the 4 hard days off you want and they "build" your monthly schedule around that. I don't know how long its been since he was on reserve schedule, so if you could clarify more I'd appreciate it. However, I fly unscheduled charter right now. Having 4 hard days off is a blessing. I could actually plan my next oil change in the car!

Yes, your days can be moved on the reserve, does it happen yes. Does it happen all the time, NO maybe once every 6 months or so.

As for the question at hand, I used to work a parttime job outside of aviation before we got a decent contract. A day here and there was all it took to pay for the extras in life.

I have been approached to fly contact, but my experience has been that most of those operaters need help for a reason, that being they are cheap. (Now I said most, not all so don't get all fired up)
I name my price they say it is too high, I say no it isn't, not for being away from home for another day and you have to at least match my daily extended day rate from NJA, whcih they won't do. The fact of the matter is that now it is easier to just extend here and there at NJA, I know the jets I'm flying and the people I'm flying with.

CFD130,
Call me crazy, stupid, or whatever, but I work for a company now that requires us to work a 20 on and 10 off rotation!! I've been doing that since Jul 05 and it's getting old. Having 10 days off is nice. I don't get bored sitting around. My wife had to leave her job due to a medical disability so I started my own business in order to supplement her income. I do a little marketing on my non-fly days when I'm on the road (we are gone the entire 20 days on). Being gone for 20 days REALLY sucks, but I can't leave because the pay a lot better than the airlines. Hopefully, I will build my business up and be able to fly part-time next year. Like someone said above, find something outside of aviation during your off time. Especially if you have a family. Taking a 3-4 day trip during your 7 days off will leave very little time for the wife. I also do some contract flying when I can take her along with me. That's the way we take cheap vacations!

I started substitute teaching part-time a few months ago. It's sort of fun, somewhat rewarding, the pay sux, but it's very flexible. I agree that it's great doing something that's not in aviation.

I tried looking for a part-time gig working ramp or something for an airline just to keep the flight bennies, but I couldn't find anyone willing to put up with my brand of laziness, and the 7/7 schedule I'm looking forward to at NJA.

I sub at the neighborhood school, only 1 day (maybe 2) and it is kinda fun, the pay is 90 a day, 7 hours, babysitting juniorhypers, look online for your school district

Find something OUTSIDE of aviation to diversify your earning capability. Too many pilots only know how to fly an airplane. Most are lucky, but some lose their medical, and some get furloughed/fired and may go months or years without employement. Diversify your ability to earn money, period.

Wise advice!

There is more to the story. Max tour length is 7 days with severe pennalties if you get home a day late. New LOA hot off the press doesn't argue the one or two day point anymore. Always two extended days pay-that's three days at daily rate-and time off your next tour if home after 1200 local.

Seven day tour guarantees no less than four off, and lessor tours guarantee no less than three off. Combined with strategic placement of hard days, I see less than the 18 day max work month-usually. I much prefer the reserve schedule, as do others I know that exceed ten years in the company.

Pervis, my thoughts exactly on the reserve schedule. Heck, my wife says she just likes the idea of a schedule and someone (Union) to back the pilots up! Fingers crossed the app goes out tomorrow...

I started an online Travel web site as a plan "B". it is the coolest gig ever to not only have a killer second income but also get your mind OFF the flying for a while.
I beg all of you to take a look at it and see what you think. NO inventory and great perks on travel. oh and don't forget the always needed home biz tax breaks.
