I interviewed with them last week. They called a friend of mine last week as well for a May interview. Rumor is they are starting new hires right away so I guess they need pilots.

32 per month in May.....no firm announcements past then but all indications are no slowdown in hiring.

Everyone is going to the 727 right now.

Jan class has now been on the line 2 months. Most of us who wanted a line (ie...don't live in Mem where reserve is a good deal) got one in May.

Don't know how it reflects the true picture, but dropping R days is about impossible now. I also was unable to drop a trip on one day to pick up another on another day due to "insufficient reserves". I know is only a tiny sliver of the "big picture", but at least what I see looks good for now.

Good luck,

Albie

Looking good

A little more info...

I just finished Fed Ex initial school and wasn't even a week out of IOE and they are already called me with a Draft trip request (150% pay). What this means is they are SHORT on second officers (and pilots in general). They are continuing to hire and we are all gaining instant seniority.

Question...

Seems as though most of you have military time... Does FEDEX really prefer military time more than civilian.

Interviewed last week and was told "all new hires will start as 727 FE's". Evidently they tried hiring to right seat in past & did not like results. Half my interview class was military (all USN due to stop loss is my guess) & half civillian so based on my experience I guess it depends if the glass is half empty or half full.

Good luck

Is it still true that they won't call you for an interview if you are on furlough from another major? Just wonderin', I have letters, etc and applied in 1999 but have heard zip. Now, before you all start flaming me about "expecting a call", I am just trying to see if it is still worth pursuing. Pissing in the wind gets messy after a while.....

OOOPS, Sorry, on my previous post concerning fedex, I asked if they are hiring into the left seat. Obviously, I meant the right seat! Thanks!

As posted above, everybody goes to the 727 panel...at the rate we're hiring, you may not be there long but you never know, nothing official on numbers for the rest of the year. FedEx got burned in the early 90's by hiring furloughed guys and may be a little gun shy, but I haven't heard of an official policy, it's all case by case. I ran into a guy who got hired recently while on furlough from USAir, of course the reasoning here could be that nobody would think of making that roundtrip even if things improve.

Can anyone confirm/deny a rumor I heard? A friend (military type)who currently works for Fed Ex says they are not interviewing military pilots affected by "stop loss" unless they have their waiver already approved. Obviously, this is a big player for the Air Force pilots, not the Navy. I have buds interested, any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have heard the same rumor but unfortunately I can't confirm/deny yet. I'm going in to check on a bud's app. in a few days and I'll let you know what Kim Daniels says. Hopefully in the meantime you can get a better answer from one of the USAF guys...Albie? Any takers?

I know for sure that a non-waiver-approved USAF pilot interviewed mid-April. Don't know any other specifics, though.

I spoke with Kim Daniels about stop lossed folks and their lack of interviews a few weeks ago. She said that they needed folks that were available immediately to interview in April and May. That is why they were not calling stop lossed pilots. I think that once they build a small pool they may start calling USAF captives again.

The latest rumors are 2 classes per month of 12 during the summer. The next class of 16 to be added behind me start Monday with another 16 the week after!

Keep fighting the good battle.

That makes perfect sense because I think the pool has nearly dried up and they need to fill the classes. I'll be talking w/Kim next week and if I hear anything new I'll post it.

I just talked to Kim on Friday (3 May) and she said they ARE calling Military Stop Lossed guys but the 1st question she asks when she calls is basically ..."What is your availability date and are you stop lossed?" She said to keep up with the updates and that they are calling based on your qualifications (not whether your stop lossed or not). Also, she hinted that over 2000 total and 250 in the last 12 months was a key number to getting a call.

One more critical piece of info. When you fill out your online profile and put in your references, the cycle is not complete. Those references don't even show up until your references log on and fill out words from their side. I knew they had to do this but I didn't know they were masked until your references logged on. Hint: Make sure you follow up with your references and check with Kim that your profile looks good.

Cheers

OK, here's the deal...at least my take.

Stop Loss: I went in to check on a bud's application and the first thing John Ryder (runs the pilot recruitment office) asked was "is he stop lossed?" It is very clear that they don't have the number of available military applicants that they would prefer, however they are still calling based on requirements. If you have a departure date, meet all the requirements and have a rec. there shouldn't be a problem getting an interview, otherwise you may have to wait for an availability date. They are tracking the stop loss thing very closely, in fact John had recently spoken with the Bureau of Naval Personnel to see if the Navy was still considering it. He also mentioned that the USAF policy was up for review in June and was hoping things would get better. Bottom line: good news, they want you, bad news you probably need some glimpse of an availability date. DON'T give up, keep your profile up-to-date, network and realize this won't be permanent.

Furloughees: They will interview, however it sounds like the only way a furloughed guy will get an interview is by having a sponsor here at FedEx walk a resume in to the Chief Pilot and convince him. Then, if offered a class date, I'm sure resigning your seniority # from the other airline would be absolutely required (however, I didn't specifically ask this question). Sounds harsh, but the company isn't willing to make the same mistake twice (reference my earlier post). Bottom line: if you really want to work for FedEx (and meet requirements, of course) and you know someone here, I'm sure you could get an interview.

In general: Gotta have a recommendation from a company pilot to get you noticed.

This should make things clear as mud, and I'm sure there are exceptions, just my take on what I heard. Also, the pilot recruitment office is swamped at the moment, as mentioned earlier, if you are not a FedEx pilot DON'T call Kim, let your buddy here do that. I wish I had something more positive to post, but I hope some information is better than none. Stay in the game, this is a great place to work and good luck to everybody.

Hugh

Just got called this past Tues for an interview in two weeks, 21-22 MAy. Hadn't updated since 9/11. Availability date 11/2001, but I am stop lossed...Hope this helps.

Fedex Hiring Info

Here is the "offical" word...a message to pilots at Fedex. I share it only to give insight into why NOT to call or pester hiring offices Here is the current info.

Current plans are to hire 24 pilots in June and 24 pilots in July and then assess the situation. That will bring the total this year to 168. Interviews are already set up for many of these positions. The Pilot Recruitment office (John Ryder's group) is swamped. Here are the guidelines for conducting business with them:
Guideline number one: Leave them alone.

If your friend is fortunate enough to get an interview, once they begin,i.e., the simulator, let them go through the process on their own. You shepherding them around is a distraction to them and an encumbrance to the process. If they fail the simulator portion, they will be told immediately. If they are successful in completing the simulator portion, then they will continue with the rest of the process. Once they complete all phases, they will receive notification of the outcome within a few weeks. You cannot find out the results for them and no information will be given to you. If they do not successfully complete the process, noinformation on the failure will be provided. The results are confidential
and there are no exceptions to the mandatory one year wait before they can be interviewed again.

If they are successful, they will be placed in a pool. There is no
guarantee for a class date in the pool, so don't ask when their class date will be. They will be assigned a class date in the same order with which they entered the pool. We like to keep some people in the pool so even though we stop hiring at some point, some people will remain in the pool until we start hiring again. They will then be contacted as to a class start date.

It is almost traditional here that pushing your pal's resume' is a part of the process. It still is as far as I am concerned. However, the people to harass are the RCPs and ACPs...not Pilot Recruitment. Many of the Chief Pilots either have or still do participate in the interview process. They know what we look for and how the process works. Prior to doing any promoting, you need to ensure that you have entered your recommendation in
the system. Without a personal recommendation from a seniority holder registered in the computer, your friend has very little chance of being selected. Do your part and make an entry...it's free.

All application entries are considered active for a year. If your friend's application is approaching a year old, it needs to be updated. That way we know he/she is still interested...and it won't cost him more $$$ to reregister. The information can be updated an unlimited number of times for free as long as the date is within a year of the last update. If the information exceeds a year, he/she is considered inactive and no longer
seeking a career with us. They will have to re-enter all the info plus pay the application fee all over again if they decide to reregister. While year old information is okay, a maximum of 6 months old information is desired.

Again, please leave the Pilot Recruitment folks alone. They are very, verybusy and do not have time to field questions and/or research requests

A couple points on above memo. Yes...insiders are quite important at Fedex. However..lack of tact can hurt you, too. Pick your refs carefully and understand the limitations they may have. Also...I wouldn't freak about June/July hiring being all that is forecast. We were told in Jan that all they "knew" for sure was that there would be a Feb class...but they would have to "assess"" the need. FedEx is VERY conservative and part of the reason they have never (and I hope they never) furloughed is they strive to say on the slightly lean verses over-manned side of the hiring equation.

As always, good luck to everyone.

Albie
