I was thinking about flying my woman up to Cedar Key (from St. Pete) - looked liked it would be a good day trip. Anyone ever been? Any advice on places to eat? Thanks.

I flew there about 4 years ago in a 172. I remember having to shutdown the engine on the runway and then pushing it into the grass. A white taxi showed up and took us into town. She had an aircraft radio in the cab. In fact, I think she'll talk to you before landing if you need to reach here.

Oh yeah....the runways pretty short too....

I haven't been there in years, but the old procedure was to fly over downtown a few times to alert the taxi service so that they will be at the airport shortly after you land.

Remember, it is a short runway and looks even shorter because there is nothing but water on both ends.

When I was last there the restaurants weren't great (burgers, some seafood, etc). It really is a fun, easy trip. You'll love it.

Yep, just make sure the taxi comes. If not, its a good 2? mile walk into town. Don't flub the landing, either.

Great place to go. The taxi lady monitors unicom and will ask you if you want a taxi. $5 a head - negotiable. There is parking on the southwest side of the airport. It's not as short as everybody makes out, maybe 2800' or something like that. If you get there in the evening you will want the taxi there when you land or else the mosquitoes will get you pretty bad. They are many and big.

The night t/o over water is a good test of your instrument skills. As soon as you break ground, you'll be over water and unless you have a good moon, you'll be hard on the gauges.

Back in the late 80's it seems like we lost a plane or two every year to the takeoff gremlins. Years ago, I made the walk into town when the taxi failed to show. I lost a highly sentimental tie tack on the way - go for the taxi.

Thank you to all of you who replied ... sounds like it would be a cool place to spend a Saturday or something. Seems like they have some pretty nice bed and breakfasts there too. We'll be in a 152 so I shouldn't have too much trouble with the landing (knock on wood). I'm looking forward to planning the trip - thanks guys!

Judy and Co. usually answer on the CTAF if you call them for a ride.

Folks, the runway isn't THAT short. I've seen cubs to Kingair's there. Biggest thing I showed up in was a Navajo.
It's not like Cedar Key is an ultralight strip. It's a decent, paved runway with no obstacles on both ends. And it's plenty wide as well. That might add to the illusion. (?)

Have fun, old Florida in it's true form. Unfortunately, they don't take well to minorities. A black family moved to the outskirts of town a few years back...and they didn't stay too long(harrassment, death threats etc..)

Rosewood is just up the road.

Besides that, it is a really neat place to go on a nice florida day. Rent a boat and spend some time fishing on the nearby islands.

Enjoy...

I use to go there a few time a month. I had a Maule so the runway was way to long. Fun place though. Be proficient at both shortfield and crosswind op's and you'll have a blast.
