I was just wondering who is a Pilot or a Pilot in training from the Northern, NJ area. I have some questions about schools and training, etc.

Plus just want to get to know other pilots, students, instructors, etc.

TEB = Teterboro
CDW = Caldwell (Essex County Airport)

I know its very close to Caldwell, but I've never been there.

N07

Lincoln Park is very small and compact, but a nice convenient place to fly to since it's uncontrolled and right outside of the city. There's also a Cessna dealer on the field; lots of new planes parked all around.

I'm not sure about flight schools there, but a close friend of mine lives very close and I'll ask him and try to post it here. If you're just flying in to Lincoln Park, make sure you park near the restaurant and not the FBO at the north end because they'll charge a $10 fee.

If anything on the field has instruction it's the place at the northern end.

This is the place to fly at Lincoln Park. AVOID WAGNER AIRWAYS if you want to NOT be ripped off.

Lincoln Park (N07) is a GREAT uncontrolled field in northern NJ. I instructed out of Teterboro at a place called Air Fleet but due to its location and prices (100LL was almost $4.00/gallon) aircraft prices were a lot higher for students. I visited all the local airfields while instructing and found that at Caldwell the controllers would try and kill pilots (they were horrible) so I avoided that place, however it is cheap to fly at when I could. Morristown airport (near 287 and 80) is an awesome airport that beats caldwell handsdown in terms of facilities and conditions - the tower even has RADAR, something that Caldwell does not (or I believe atleast!).

What I liked about Lincoln Park in particular is the park like setting. Very country like and at Lincoln Park Aviation I felt very welcome. Sometimes you might even see deer beside the runway. However it is fairly small and narrow.

Is it good to see deer beside the runways????

more pilots are killed by deer than by controllers!!!!

Yeah they were fine, never ventured across the runway when I was in the pattern.

It was the birds you had to really look out for!

Interesting mix of schools/airports in Northern NJ; personally I would avoid TEB like the plague since rental rates are ridiculous, and you'll waste money and time waiting in line for corporate jets while you learn nothing. Fly there on your own time after you get licensed if you want to breathe jet-a fumes.

CDW is probably one of the better training airports since you'll learn to deal with a tower and moderate traffic, but will spend a LOT less money and idle time. For rentals and instruction, look up Caldwell Flight Academy - their fleet is a little older and run down, but you'll pay significantly less and receive the same or better quality instruction as anyone else.

Now if you're coming from further west or don't mind driving an extra half hour, go look up Damian @ Andover-Aeroflex, take up the super cub or husky and learn to REALLY fly. At a minimum, go treat yourself to a tailwheel endorsement there after you get your private; you haven't flown until you fly without a nosewheel.

Good luck

Hey, i got some info for N07 whoever wants to know about it.

Its a nice little airport, and a great place to get a rating.... Just avoid Wagner Airways, If you go to www.airnav.com , look at their ratings. a 50% satisfactory rating is not that good if you ask me. But if you go to Aero Safety training, or Lincoln Park Aviation, you'll be more than pleased. I got my Private here and thought i was great. Im right now at Embry Riddle and cant wait to get up there for the summer to do some flying!!! If anyone has any questions about N07 feel free to ask them :)

Thanks

I did my private training at Flying W (N14) in South Jersey. When I moved to North Jersey in 2002 I started flying out of CDW. Although TEB is 5 minutes from my place, I decided against it for the reasons Jethro stated. Oh yeah, I fly with Mac Dan at CDW and recommend them without reservation. When I started my instrument I thought it would be fun to train at a busier airport and one that was in my own back yard, so I decided to do the IR with Air Fleet at TEB. Between the wait, the landing fee that increased from $6.50 to $15, and instructor rates that increased to almost $50/hour, I decided to finish up at CDW.

I will admit that in the past a few of the controllers there were horrible, especially on a moderately busy day. But it appears that after the mid-air they have gotten a lot better. I think they have radar, but they didn't use it to the extent that the controllers at MMU used theirs because many of them weren't trained on it.

Wagner Airways

Avoid this hell hole at all costs.

They will take all of your money as quickly as they can. their aircraft sukc, the instructors sukc, the cost sukcs and the mgmnt sukcs.

I had a friend who was a cfii/mei there and it was 'the worst job he ever had'. He was treated like he owed them for working there, had to stay til 5 everyday even in the crappiest wx, shirt +tie for 152 flying. He had more multi than all the other instructors there combined, yet he could not rent or teach in the duchess, only the Chief Pilot. wtf?

This is true... on many days TEB has a longer IFR departure list then EWR ! The airport and airspace around is a zoo.

Umm... I really can't comment on a public board... But, be nice to those controlllers, they have upper management written all over them...

;)

ATCER:

Quick question for ya. When the weather is low IFR in early morning (tower at CDW closed) it can take over 45 min to get out. What is order or procedure for determining IFR departures? I'm sure EWR has priority, then TEB, MMU, then CDW??? Just curious.

Hmmm... I'm not a terminal guy but I'll give it a try. CDW is covered by the EWR sector at the room (N90, New York Tracon). I'm guessing you are right, that you become low priority behind all the airports in the area EWR, TEB, etc. EWR starts to really get going early with both arrivals and departures.

I'm not sure how they prioritze departures but I do know someone to ask. I'll drop a line to a buddy of mine at N90 and let you know what he tells me.
