Jeez, all that time on the road just so you can get points and miles and go back on the road on your days off?

Who goes back on the road? My wife uses all my hotel and airline points to attend her conventions. I have yet to use any for myself :(

AirBear

I hear that! But I did get a free I-pod last year out of my AMEX points!

Actually, I should have just baught one and used it as a job related tax deduction, since it's the only way I can get any sleep in the crew lounge anymore, what with everyone talking so loud on their cell phones and what not.

They are only hiring out of CMH and LAX for now. ...

Hey Hopalong,
Now I am confused...I read the post on the other thread. I wanted to put a application thinking I lived in Dallas as being one of the domiciles...but if offered a job I'll need to move to CMH or LAX? Is that correct in what I am reading?

Do I need another 1K of flight time before I attempt the next step anyway? BTW did you know why the other applicants did not make it?

Congrats on your new job!

I think I'll get the company card and rake in those airline miles. Thanks grump
and bear and everyone else for all the info.
StaticWick, it doesn't hurt to apply. I may be wrong but I believe that they are only calling in people who put CMH and LAX as their desired domicile on the application. This may change and may be in the future they will need pilots in Dallas. May be others will comment and give you better info.

Never wait till you think you have enough time to apply. It's better to interview and maybe get it, or maybe not get it due to flt time than to wait till you think you are "competitive". If you meet the mins try anyway. If it does not pan out the first time around, now your name is in the hat and you came back a few months later. Plus you get a nice tour of the facility and good breakfast at the Hilton. Just my two sense. When I went to the regionals six years ago I waited till I thought I was "competitive" and that cost me a few months seniority. If you meet the mins apply.

If you're looking for airline miles, go with the company card.
I just received a SWA card, hoping to gain miles on them for commuting STL-CMH. Do you think I should get a company card too? I guess I could use either, depending on the situation, with the goal of accumulating SWA miles ASAP.

But shouldn't I get a co. card for purchasing company scheduled airline tix? These I can't buy with a SWA card.

2 years and I only have about 30k points on the company card. Plus I have no idea how to cash them in.

With the SWA card and points gotten on hotel stays and airline on SW... I got about 120 SW points a year... or 8 or so free round trips plus the companion pass. I can request a reward trip just a couple hours before departure. Easy.

Track your miles and points with this

You can't use both. If you think you'll be on SWA most of the time, get the SWA card. I'm guessing from his post that gunfyter gets put on SWA a lot. SWA = cheap tickets = not many points on the company card.

I get stuck on every airline imaginable, and most times the tix aren't cheap. One tour, they bought a $300 ticket from SFO-DEN, but failed to notify me that I had an airline to catch. They then scrambled and bought me a ticket SFO-ORD on United, $1000 in first class. $700 mistake on someone's part. But it all goes on the company card. And sometimes they're airlining you 4 or 5 times to try to meet up with an airplane as the schedule constantly changes.

Thanks All for your input!

Thread hijack, ignore if you're so inclined.

NJA sounds pretty great right now. Is this situation likely to continue for the foreseeable future (not just pay/QOL, but hiring and upgrade)? If so, any suggestions for a low end freight dog career progression chart that ends at NJA (or another frac, I suppose)? Obviously, I could go to a regional and get a lot of turbine SIC while making peanuts, but are there other options? I know some guys get these mysterious Citation/Lear jobs with a few hundred multi, but I've never seen one. For the sake of argument, say we're talking about a guy with 2000TT and 300 multi, all piston. What to do?

Regards,
Rip

Also, I've been searching threads about the company credit card vs. the
amex hilton platinum. What do you all think? I'm leaning towards the company
credit card because it seems like you get airline miles vs. more hotel points
that have bad transfer rates. I don't know which to do.

With direct deposit available to all crews, beware before you go with the company CC. I looked at it, however didn't want to do the accounting for the company that needed to be done to submit the expense reports.

Do what you want, but I would think long and hard about the great card from the company.

I have been using the company card for 2 1/2 months and I already have $10,000 spent on it (all company- no personal expenses). I would have had another $2500 on it if I got it right away and used it for my training hotel stays. I want the airline miles and those miles go towards any airline, but not into any airlines frequent flier accounts. You need to get the full amount on your card for the ticket- I believe 25000 for restricted domestic roundtrip and 35000 for less restrictions. I plan on cashing out the ticket as soon as possible and then going to the HH Amex (I've already got it and use it for everything that isn't a company expense). You can change cards, but if you use the company card you have to use it and not any other cards unless you chose to get rid of the card- which is allowed at any time.

Hotels are pretty expensive on a trip and I'll pay for the airline if I have to since the hotel nights would cost more anyway. I've looked around and it seems that the best card for airlines might be the Starwood Amex. We very rarely stay in Sheratons or other Starwood hotels, but when you do cash in your points I believe you get an extra 5000 points when you get to either 20000 or 25000. HH Amex is an aweful card for airline, but awesome for free hotels night with all our Hilton stays. Congrats on the job.

I see a lot of gripes about "doing the company accounting for them" but it really isn't that big of deal. I don't see it as much different than filling out the paper report and mailing it in. My typing is better than my handwriting however, maybe that is part of the reason!
