The question is who turned him in to management directly.
A "colleague".

Main Entry: col·league
Pronunciation: 'kä-(")lEg
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle French collegue, from Latin collega, from com- + legare to depute -- more at legate: an associate in a profession or in a civil or ecclesiastical office
- col·league·ship /-"ship/ noun

An associate in a profession, sounds more like a co-pilot or captain, then some ragged out single mom that hands out coffee while wearing a hat.

How was CAL not able to keep this out of the media?

They probably wanted to beat the FEDS to the press release. If the FBI takes their information to a grand jury to get an idictment, the US Attorney's office will put it in a press release anyway.
