Yuasa is the battery manufacturer. They are an excellent battery manufacturer, possibly one of the best in the world. I am sure they will get to the bottom of it. Who knows what is causing it. Did Boeing spec the battery wrong? Did they spec the battery one way and then install it in a way that wouldnt work with how they spec'd it? Was it spec'd for a certain way to charge it, but it is being charged completely differently?

There are a ton of other questions to be asked.

I think there is a problem with grounding. These batteries are getting cooked. I think some of the high draw items will have to go back of the accessory drives. Hope I'm wrong because that won't be a quick fix.

Japanese safety investigators have determined an All Nippon Airways 787 lithium-ion main battery malfunctioned after being over-charged, forcing the widebody to make an emergency landing on 16 January and triggering a global grounding of the fleet still in effect.
The 32V battery overheated and sprayed burning electrolytes in a compartment beneath the cockpit because it received a charge exceeding its design limit, Japan aviation safety agency investigator Hideo Kosugi told reporters in a press conference near the damaged aircraft still parked at Takamatsu airport.
 
Not sure how this will go since the more well run Continental got taken over by jeff and he chose the more-than-likely-ill-fated merge with United route, but the old Continental would have gotten taken care of by Boeing. Or we would have threatened to look at Airbus. So, this 787 better be a quick fix because even jeff isn't just going to go lick the cat's butt. Somebody will build us a working airplane asap. Shoot, bring on the A380.

Kinda makes an airplane order thats half boeing and half Airbus, like legacy UAL did, not look so bad. I was never a fan of putting all the eggs in one basket. Even AA learned that lesson and split there order.

I am less aware of that tactic, but I can't completely disagree with you. However... The single thing that makes aligning with one manufacturer a good idea is to obtain some favor when this sort of thing happens. What needs to take place (and what Bethune would do IMHO) is make Boeing aware that they need to back their product and signal that "all Boeing" is demonstratively superior to spliting aircraft orders. Orffer UAL, JAL and ANA whatever replacement is needed. They should be reminded to not miss this opportunity. Open up another line of B748s or 777s and get to work!

That may work but I think when push comes to shove they (Boeing) are more likely to be motivated if they understand the customer has another option they can easily go to. Maybe, I don't know for sure, if they figure they have the customer locked up anyway they are less motivated. Maybe that eliminates any favor, who knows one way or another they got to fix the thing. I would be in favor of 777 or 748 but you know me I am a fan of that bus I would also be in favor of the 330, 380 and am already looking forward to our 350's.

I'm afraid this may not be a quick fix on the 787. And you're probably right, Boeing might thumb their nose at us. I don't know. Wishful thinking on my part, but I'd love to see a big bid on your side for 748s. Correct me if I'm wrong, but would not some pilot leaders of L-UAL's past be the sort who would speak out on this?
 
I don't think the 747 order is going to happen. I think it should but I don't see UCH (I have given up on the" your side/our side" thing looking forward) being willing to pull that trigger. They seem to be hooked on the 2 engineBboeing thing. When I was on the 777 I can remember many times being weight restricted on the PEK ORD legs. I am sure HKG will be just as bad. The 748 would solve all of that. We will see but I doubt it.

Both the 200LR and the 300ER appear to have longer legs than the United 777-200ERs. Does UCH have any plans to use these airframes to solve the weight restriction issues ?

Good question. You are talking about a company that can't even get two consecutive paychecks correct. Who knows.

Indeed. Smisek probably sees all of the 300ERs at LAX, and wonders why all those silly foreigners bought those expensive airplanes.
