How about days off?

How many days off? Are you guaranteed you will be home before your days off start?

Anyone else find it odd that Ameristar raised their minimums? Seems to be against the trend theese days.....

If it's anything like USA Jet, I'm sure the answers are "many" and "yes". Out of all the flea bags based at KYIP, you can't beat the quality of life that USA Jet has to offer. (sarcasm noted)

Seriously though, I flew for AJC and used to run into USA Jet pilots all the time. They had the same complanints and comments about their employer that we had about ours. If your main objective is to gather some jet time, than this would be a good place to get it. If you're concerned about quality of life (especially long-term) than ANY 135 on-demand outfit probably won't meet your needs.

I flew on-demand freight for 3 years for 2 different companies. Quality of life wasn't bad for a single guy. Some months I was home more than others, but I knew all of this going into it. However, I made really good money (compared to other types of flying I was qualified for) and gained a lot of good experience in a relatively short amount of time. I made a lot of friends and got to know a lot of great people (at my company and at competitors). If I had to do it over again, I would.

When I was hired (1999), those were the published minimums. When I left a couple of years later, to the best of my knowledge they were still the same. However, that was also during a time when jobs were plentiful and a lot of guys were leaving for other opportunities.

Careeer Advice

If QOL of is an important aspect of your immediate career goals, take some advice stay away from the on-demand business. I agree with clyde, it sucks. This particulaily true if you have a family and want to be a commuter. However if you want to build quality TJ PIC quickly to give you the resume stuff for your next job, there is no finer place to do it than in the on-demand business. Our PICs have gotten jobs at anyplace you want to name, and alot have called us back when they became unemployed to see if we would hire them back. We hired about 6 ex-pilots who were furlouged and lived locally, they had done a good job for us. It was a win-win for both sides.

No comparison

It is hard to compare USA Jet on-demand and Ameristar on-demand. They really approach their business in a much different manner. I have heard that the paper work at Ameristar will drive a sane man crazy. Turnover at Ameristar to twice to three times that at USA Jet. So if you are going into the on-demand business watch out, like clyde said.
