American to Split Aircraft Order: Report

By Ted Reed
07/19/11 - 05:18 PM EDT

DALLAS (TheStreet) -- American(AMR_) is expected to split an order for new jets between Airbus and Boeing (BA_), a newspaper report says.

Boeing will get a larger share of the order for more than 400 jets, the Dallas Morning News reported Tuesday afternoon. Airplanes will continue to be delivered into the next decade.

"American may very well have played the two companies off each other to get the best deal, and then took both deals," said the newspaper's aviation blog.

Now that it has an entree at American, Airbus could also attempt to sell wide-body airplanes to the carrier, the blog suggested, even though American is currently committed to the use of Boeing 777s and 787s for its long-haul international flying.

The deal is expected to be announced Wednesday, when the carrier will also report earnings and announce the sale of American Eagle, the newspaper said.
