What this pilot did was just plain wrong, there is a time and place for everything and an Airline flight is not the place for it. While I respect his spiritulism mabey he should consider a career as a missionary worker. I think that people on the airline that paid good money for their seats would also agree. Quite frankley aviation guys that I have met in the past that would pull this sort of thing are usually blowhard zealot hypocrits that put more money in G-strings then collection baskets.

The fact is that Jesus and God are supposed to come before everything else- and thats exactly what this guy did- put God first.
Ok, who says that Jesus and God come before everything else? Remember, millions of people out there don't believe in Jesus and God. The real fact is that this numbnuts had absolutely NO business making remarks like that over the PA to a captive audience. I'd bet that 99.9% of the population does not want to hear anything like this coming from the cockpit. If I were a paying passenger, I would have told him how unprofessional and offensive it was. If I were a jumpseater, of course I'd just thank him for the ride and be on my way.

I hope the guy gets spanked hard for this. And as much as I hate greedy attorneys and silly lawsuits, I'd find it funny if AA gets sued by passengers for emotional distress. People could hear his comments and then remember the EgyptAir and SilkAir pilots commiting suicide. They'd be scared $hitless about what might happen next.

So far Super80, Timebuilder, TonyC, etc. haven't turned this thread into yet another bible discussion...let's please keep it that way.

I'm a "right-wing" Christian and I don't want to hear this coming over the PA.

That said, the level of anger being leveled at this pilot on this board really betrays the viewpoints of many of you.

You hate God, so therefore you hate this guy. Obvious, really.
If God is a fairy tale, whatcha getin' all worked over.

It seems verrrrry anti-intellectual to get so hot and bothered over someone elses 'mythology'. Makes ya go hmmm.

Very interesting comment, 100LL..."you hate God..."

Don't think anyone has mentioned that little fact in any of these posts--in fact, it seems that most of us simply think that there is a time and place for prostyltizing...(gee, did I spell that correctly?:D )..and the cockpit is not one of them.

I certainly don't think lawsuits would be in order, though stranger things have happened.

Maybe we simply need to take a step back do a priority check on life... :)

I think that a country that shuns God is in for no good. And Its possible that this guy had a calling from God
Having a calling from GOD is one thing. Performing an inventory of all the people on your plane dumb enough to believe in the biggest hoax ever perpetrated on mankind, is another.

A person is free to say whatever they want or choose regardless of whether some view it differently, just be prepared to pay the consequences if you take it too far.

I would assume this guy is in for a rough and bumpy ride in the upcoming weeks.

I could imagine making a call on the roll asking for a prayer from the pax in the cabin :D the view on some faces would be worth millions.$$

There is an interesting thread on this topic running on a UK chatboard www.pprune.org
Some people are comparing his comments to those on Saudi Airlines where they pray during everyflight over the PA.
A Texas paper says

Pilot Rodger Findiesen of Annapolis, Md., then invited others to talk with these passengers about their religious beliefs during the 4 1/2-hour cross-country flight on Friday, spokesman Tim Wagner said

Does anybody on here know this guy?

This is from the Daily News...

An American Airlines pilot terrified passengers aboard a Los Angeles-to-New York flight when he asked Christians to identify themselves and then called those who weren't Christian "crazy," witnesses and an airline spokesman said yesterday.

So I guess he scared some people. People are nervous enough about flying these days without adding to it.

JBcrjca,
Not to totally speak for Super80,Tony C~, Timebuilder, etc.; But I don't see any of these guys trying to defend this pilots lack of professionalism or good judgement. I couldn't agree more that there is a time and a place. Just because someone has a strong conviction about a topic (I think "Bible Defense" demonstrates that) doesn't mean they lack the ability to know when or where to discuss it. As you can see they have not responded to this thread yet, but I don't think they would be jumping to defend this pilots decision to share his faith on a flight with captive passengers.

Anybody else notice the distinct absence of the "Religion doesn't belong on flightinfo.com" posts that would otherwise come up immediately??????

Hmm....

Anyway, I'd day that life imitates flightinfo.com. It is a subject that was bound to come up one of these days.

:)

flying4life,
Sorry if I was misunderstood, but I wasn't implying that those gentlemen would defend this pilots actions. I think we all (except AviatorCentral) agree that the guy made a very poor choice with his comments. What I was referring to is the frequent tendency for some threads to get hijacked into some sort of religious debate. This thread isn't really about religion...it's about a guys boneheaded course of action. I was just hoping it would remain that way. If anything gets hijacked, it should be the usual chemtrails/bbq threads. I'll get hung for saying this, but sometimes even a BBQ discussion gets really boring.

JBcrjca,
No worries, I probably didn't read it right, but this thread does have the potential of going down religion road simply because the pilot was trying to use his position to express his religious beliefs. "And that's all
I have to say about that........."

ANY thread has the potential of going down ANY road simply because it's FlightInfo.com Hangar.

The man, in my opinion, had a serious lapse in judgment. There are times, places, and methods to teach. A commercial flight in the aircraft cabin over the PA from the Captain is not one of them.

That being said, this is not the only time a pilot has lapsed in judgment, and it's not the only type of judgment lapse. I would hope that the religious "element" of this lapse will not necessitate an unusually severe punishment.

I agree. He decided, for what ever reason that it was important to do this, and I'm sure he knew what he was getting into.

See what happens when you go to a religious retreat, you do stupid things like this guy!

Then he belongs behind a pulpit, not throttles and a yoke. We've all been told at various times in our lives not to discuss politics or religion in the workplace. How hard was it to figure out that it's even less appropriate over the P.A.?

(On the other hand, there might be a positive side to this: if he keeps doing crap like that, he'll make room for some furloughed pilot.)

Super80 flys for AA, I think that explains it all.
Funny...I had the same thought the moment I heard about this...however, I'll take your word for it that it wasn't you, Super80. :)

JBcrjca,
but sometimes even a BBQ discussion gets really boring.

That because you don't cook and you think that Hooters has good BBQ. (of course the breasts are really good)

Sorry about the hijacking of this but I just could not pass it up.
