I was wondering if I could get the low down on some of the AE bases... Particularly the Junior ones. From what they told me, there has been kind of a random selection in each training class and not just SJU. Please spare me pure negativity because I am aware of the upgrade situation etc.. Just looking for good info b/c I didnt really find anything in my search and I am having trouble getting on eaglelounge. Thanks.

What kind of "low down" are you looking for? Do you just want the names of the bases? Write a specific question and we'll try to help.

The bases are...

LAX (Saab and RJ)
DFW (Saab and RJ)
ORD (RJ and CRJ)
BOS (RJ)
MIA (ATR)
SJU (ATR)
LGA (RJ)

Didn't mean to confuse you with the slang. Are you an older fella? Anyway, I was just looking for general info. I can get some info like equipment/routes etc..on the website but I really wanted to hear opinions on the bases (qol, schedule or anything I may not think to ask having not worked there yet) because going into training I was told that you may have a choice to make. Thanks

Wow, so English replies and tries to help you out and you make fun of her........ Maybe that's why its so hard to get a straight answer out of anybody around here....

First day of class is base selection. Oldest in class chooses first. It's a crapshoot as to what's available. Last class was all props. Before that was half a dozen EMJ and 3 or 4 props. Who knows? All I can say is that if given the chance, and you have the option of choosing a plane that flies out of a base you want, choose that. You can always request a transfer later. More than likely EMJ will be ORD or DFW. Props will be ATR in MIA and SJU or Saab in LAX, DFW. The only CRJ base will be ORD... everything is being shifted to there in the next year.

I cut and pasted this from another site. Very well written. Congrats on a well written answer to whoever did this first...

Training:

64 hrs/mo @ 22.89 + 8 hr/day per diem @ 1.55

Hotel - Ballpark Inn Arlington, double occupancy, transport provided and plenty eats/groceries w/in walking distance

Should be M-F for ground schools and times for systems classes vary (6a-3p or 3p-12a for the EMB), total time ~ 4 wks ground, 2 wks sim, 2-4 wks IOE.

Reserve:

11 days off per month, usually 3 blks of 3 and 1 blk of 2. RAP (reserve availability periods) of 0400-1900, 1000-2400, 1900-2400. 2 hr callout. Also ready reserve (at airport) 0530-1330, 1200-2000, 1900-2400.

Pay on rsv is 75 hrs/mo guarantee plus any per diem due when you're on duty. You can proffer for available trips to try to control your sked but basically does no good while very junior. Sometimes can commute in/out on your first/last day.

Bases:

Looks like ATR SJU, ORD CRJ, and DFW/ORD EMJ will be the most junior stuff. Maybe a few SF3 in LAX/DFW. But that's just an educated guess, don't bank on anything. Seniority by DOB in class, assignments by seniority.

A word to the wise: Don't be a size queen and choose the CRJ unless you want to be stuck in ORD for many years until upgrade! The EMJ is a decent airplane (and I've flown enough different ones to know). The Saab is possibly my favorite airplane and I hear the ATR is pretty good too. So go for QOL as opposed to airplane type or you'll soon wish you had. FWIW.

Good luck.

Boston -- Great flying, great crews, very expensive city. If you have one of the dreaded 4 hour sits between flights it's 20 minutes into downtown boston via the blue line (subway). I took this job to travel and Toronto, Halifax, NYC, Baltimore, DC, and Quebec City overnights suited me well. I was even a little surprised that Norfolk was pretty fun and Raleigh wasn't nearly as bad as I expected. The walk-arounds in sub-freezing wx with de-ice fluid trashing your shoes sucks but shooting approaches down to 200 & 1/2 all spring & fall long was great.

Dallas -- especially Saab flying is BORING...if I have to do another Kileen overnight again i'd probably have to shoot myself. When you are looking forward to your Shreveport overnight you know you've hit bottom. If you have a 4 hour sit here forget it...you're stuck in DFW as it's 45 minutes to Dallas and 45 minutes to Ft. Worth with no easy way to get anywhere. For some reason the hotels Eagle puts you up in the midwest tend to be a little dumpier than what I found when I was on the East Coast.

LGA -- never been based their but they have a lot of overlap flying with BOS.

Just remember bid the airplane that flies out of the base you want. Once you bid an airplane you are stuck in it. If you bid a turbo-prop you can bid the jet after 1 year, once you are in a jet you cannot bid out of that equipment. If you bid the CRJ...you better like Chicago.

Thanks for the info everyone, and I did not mean to come off fresh on the earlier reply. Its hard to determine the tone of written posts. Anyway, Thanks.

Hey that was me! I've hit the big time now being quoted from another board. How sad. Anyway, one correction: the per diem is 16hrs/day in training.

Dallas will have the cheapest cost of living.

If you're commuting, I'd suggest Chicago as a base. There's a million things to do off the L train and it goes directly into Ohare. You don't need a car.

There are pluses and minuses to all Eagle bases.

LAX is expensive, but the Saab is relatively junior, it's a good plane, and you can transfer to the RJ when you can hold it. Remember, you can "up-grade" to the RJ from a turbo-prop, but you can't go back to a turbo-prop from the jet, so make your domicile request after careful consideration.

BOS is expensive, but the destinations are great, local hotels are outrageously expensive if you get stuck for a night, and it's all Embraer RJs. Don't stay at a crash pad run by a flight attendant named "PJ" or something to that effect, the dog isn't potty trained

Dallas is probably the cheapest place to live and it's easy to commute, It just wasn't my favorite place to fly. The airport is huge and there is alot of walking involved, but the food choices are many and varied.

I was never based in Chicago, so I don't know what it's like to fly there, but I did live there for a winter. It's cold. The Cubs are fun to watch. Commuting is pretty easy between AA and United.

Miami was a blast, but I hear the overnights are very short now. Flying in the Bahamas and the Florida Keys was great. I was there in March, and it was 80 degrees and humid, with the air-conditioning running at max.

San Juan? Yo no se. I have heard the overnights are great, St. Kitts, Antigua, San Maarten, etc. But, there are down sides. Commuting is tough and rent is high, so is the crime rate. I have heard it's a great place to work if you are single and speak spanish. Also, you have to go through customs almost every time you return to San Juan.

New York is expensive, Kew Gardens can get old quick if you are thinking crash pad, but there are lots of them. The destinations were great.

Choose wisely...

The days inn is about $45 out the door. Thats not too bad.

The CP and crews are great. Most of the crews are pretty laid back. DFW seems to be pretty uptight. I'm sure its due to the fact that thats where HQ is.
