wow this month we have 45 captain vacancies. how you like them apples

I bid captain after 12 months there and was flying as SF3 CA after 18. Nov 97. I think I grossed 38 grand that year.

this is the key statement. they have not been backfilling too much and most CA vacancies were simply a base transfers.

Yes, but this was about Eagle. I also think that Eagle pays you about 8 dollars more an hour, and has union protection.

true someone who started 7 years ago got the big screw. But why I posted this was to show people who are looking into their future and not present time, how times are changing at eagle. Those 45 slots don't include the numbers we moved up due to senior FOs leaving which also gets you closer to upgrade.
someone just starting has about 1400 people ahead of them to upgrade. Lets say minus 300 flowback spots which should bring you to 1100

each upgrade can represent a captain leaving or an FO ahead of you in seniority leaving. It's fairly reasonable that you can expect at least 30 people senior to you to leave each month.

so with 1100 people to go through...
15 upgrades/FOs ahead of you leaving each month is about 6 years for an upgrade
30 a month is 3 years
45 a month is 2 years

only time will tell

Why would 30 people a month continue to leave if things are getting better. those 5, 6, and 7 year FO's will likely stay at eagle for a while or forever. They won't want to leave there 401k, Vacation, Senority. not too mention their 7, 8, 9, and 10 year captain pay scales. Which might not be much, but you can live pretty well in the midwest. After the flowbacks leave it will slow way down again unless eagle gets more planes or starts feeding for another carrier. not likely. if you take a look at the eagle senority list you have a lot of older FO's, probably married, a couple kids, car and house payments. They are not going anywhere. not too many people retiring in the next couple of years either.

FOs and captains are both leaving for other airlines. A few to CAL, Cathay and some with interviews at Delta....thats just talkin to guys in San Juan. Im sure there are a lot more leaving or wanting to leave from the bases in the states.
Even if someone is 40 with kids and family and whatever, they will be making the same money their 3rd year at a major and it only goes up from there. An FO making ends meet with their current pay wont mind a small pay decrease their first year at their next company. Im sure they all see moving up may be a temporary set back in pay and QOL but its more than worth it in the long run even if you have seniority at Eagle. I can see a decent amount of pilots from the DFW base staying, but not too many at all the others. All of those 5,6,7 year FOs will probably make captain and leave after a year or so. I don't know why they wouldnt if things at the majors keep going forward. It just doesn't make sense to stay when you can try and get on with a major at the base you are already at. When you get to a new job you roll over your 401k, at ten years you keep your travel benefits, basically you lose your seniority but when you upgrade you start all over at the bottom of the CA seniority anyways.
