The No. 8 U.S. airline said in a statement that it has already begun hiring all different kinds of workers. Its larger competitors have slashed their work forces by the thousands to survive an industry downturn.
America West currently has about 13,000 employees.
The Phoenix-based carrier also said it has reached deals with lessors to add four aircraft to its fleet next year, as it had planned. The four Airbus A320s are expected to be in service by June 1, America West said.
The company is also scheduled to take delivery on two additional planes in late 2004.
America West revamped its fare structure about two years ago to compete with discount rivals. It recently added three nonstop cross-country routes and plans to add a fourth early next year.
The carrier, whose third-quarter profit topped analysts' estimates, said in October it would most likely report a loss for the fourth quarter but expected to post a profit for the full-year 2004.
America West shares were up 1.14 percent at $11.56 on the New York Stock Exchange (News - Websites) on Friday morning. The shares hit a year high of $15.99 on Nov. 10.
