Reuters
America West to add more than 1,000 jobs in 2004
Friday December 26, 11:33 am ET

CHICAGO, Dec 26 (Reuters) - America West Airlines (NYSE:AWA - News) on Friday said it would hire more than 1,000 employees next year to support its previously announced plan to expand its business by 10 percent in 2004.

The No. 8 U.S. airline said in a statement that it has already begun hiring all different kinds of workers. Its larger competitors have slashed their work forces by the thousands to survive an industry downturn.

America West currently has about 13,000 employees.

The Phoenix-based carrier also said it has reached deals with lessors to add four aircraft to its fleet next year, as it had planned. The four Airbus A320s are expected to be in service by June 1, America West said.

The company is also scheduled to take delivery on two additional planes in late 2004.

America West revamped its fare structure about two years ago to compete with discount rivals. It recently added three nonstop cross-country routes and plans to add a fourth early next year.

The carrier, whose third-quarter profit topped analysts' estimates, said in October it would most likely report a loss for the fourth quarter but expected to post a profit for the full-year 2004.

America West shares were up 1.14 percent at $11.56 on the New York Stock Exchange (News - Websites) on Friday morning. The shares hit a year high of $15.99 on Nov. 10.:) :) :)

mins?

What are the mins at America West?

Their website says they aren't hiring, which we know isn't true.

Thanks in advance.

Our Mins are 2500tt 1000 turbine & ATP certificate and a letter of rec. is just about mandatory.

Anyone else out there get called for an interview? I got the call last week (nice X-mas present). I am also interested in the new contract and what it may mean regarding pay, work rules etc.
Thanks in advance.

A revised version of the last TA (now called Contract 2004) has been sent to the pilot group for another vote. The polls close the first of next week. Stay tuned......

Great news for America West. Their plan to increase passenegr revenue by 10% sure makes it seem like a nice trend is developing in the industry! Let's just hope the growth is contagious to the rest of the carriers.

Orionpilot....

How long did it take from when you sent your res/app in before they called you? Good Luck!:)

Interview call

Ironically, after being "active" on their application list for about 6 years, they finally called. Not sure which way to go... seems like leaving a captain's slot at a good "regional" (COEX) for HP is a lateral move. Anyway... lots of thinking to do.

Anyone have any more information on these guys? My cousin is a concourse sup, but she isn't exactly a fount of flight ops info.

If only they'd called about five years ago...

Thanks!

Hmm...I'm just thinking out loud, so I'm sorry if this isn't much help...but here goes...

I'm not sure I'd go so far as to call going to HP from COEX a "lateral move", but leaving a jet captain job with plenty of seniority is always risky. I recently left a left-seat gig myself to start over at another carrier in an effort to improve my QOL, and the jury's still out on whether it was the smart move or not. Overall I'm pleased with my new job, but you have to ask yourself what your long-term goals are. If you're satisfied with your career success, your compensation and your overall QOL to this point, maybe you should stay where you're at. Believe me, some lucky chap will be glad you did. But if you want to continue to advance your career and fly a "real airliner" (I say that tongue-in-cheek, although I think most pilots at the regionals still secretly lust after the big iron, even if they won't admit it), then you almost have to take the offer at HP. If you don't take the plunge and leave COEX at some point, you'll have to be satisfied with flying an RJ around for the rest of your career, right?

For what it's worth, I used to crashpad with several HP pilots and they were terrific guys, but it seemed like they complained a lot about their jobs! Maybe if they are able to secure some better pay and work rules with their next TA your decision will be easier. Of course by then the offer may not be on the table. I feel for you, not an easy decision at all. Good luck with whatever you decide, and congrats on the offer.

Hansoma,
I attended the OBAP conference last August (just an average white dude) where AWA was handing out apps. I mailed in the app in September and also asked an AWA pilot I know to walk in my resume and a LOR. I got the call December 23rd. I'm not sure what the secret handshake is but I'm grateful for the opportunity.

Good luck to all,
Orionpilot

Stinkbug... good thoughts, and mine exactly. Becoming furlough fodder at any airline doesn't appeal, AWA's contract for QOL really sucks, even compared to what I have now. The commute to PHX would be easier than IAH, but only in terms of actual length of commute. Their work rules don't seem to support commuting, and I'm not in a position to move my family (NEVER chase iron!)

As for lusting after heavy iron, I only lust for a 747, and I've come to grips with the thought of never getting any of that, so its ok.

Ah well! Thanks for the input!

ERJ2Fly,

If you had a lot of JET PIC time (over 1000 hours), I would make the jump to HP. You will eventually make more money at HP, and fly nice airplanes. I also have been to Phoenix on plenty of overnights, and I really like the town, even though the Summers seem really hot. I have talked to many HP pilots and they say that their last contract treated them like regional pilots flying larger airplanes, but if this new contract improves that---then I would go. It seems like they are getting in better financial shape and have found a niche. I believe they hire into all three planes (733, 757, and bus) also. Good luck.

Bye Bye--General Lee;)

ERJ2FLY;

If you are an RJ Capt with close to 10 yrs senority and the possibility of a flow thru to Continental, then why would you even give HP any sort of consideration. If I we're you, I would stay put.
The guys and gals at HP are a fine bunch , but morale is below sea level, reserve leaves much to be desired as are line holder schedules, and money and retirement is non-existent. To paraphrase Winston Churchill " never have so many worked for so little for so long...." Do your self and your family a favor and stay where you are. You can do better!

Never wait on a flow through. How long before CAL hires?

PHX is hot in the summer but I found it no less comfortable that freezing my ass off in the North for 4 months a year.

They have hot chicks, too!TC

Autothrottle,

How are the other 8 months of the year in PHX? We stay at a really nice resort in Scottsdale---and that is nice year round. I believe the housing situation is pretty good since houses are probably cheaper than the LA Basin, and it always looks like from above that there are pools at each house, and lots of golf courses. If you get tired of the hot weather, you can always bid ORD or JFK trips and see some rain or snow in the Winter. I would take PHX's hot dry weather over IAH's sticky hot weather anytime......

If you have enough jet PIC to eventually get hired by another airline if you do not like AmWest---then go for it. Waiting for a flow through that has currently beeen discontinued (except for the grandfathered people) (and since Expjet is now a seperate company)---I would go for the bigger equipment and chance at a better salary.

Bye Bye--General Lee;)
