Anybody heard of Alitalia recruiting US pilots????

Nope

I believe they have their own ab initio program or hire direct from their own military. Besides, they were nearly bankrupt until the govt (just recently) bailed them out.

There are other Italian operators (Volare, etc) that hire EU citizens that are not necessarily Italian---but of course they have the "right to work".

If you're not a dual citizen it may be very hard to break into the European job market.
