I have been seeing all white strech 8's, some
with the old blowpipes, some with the cfm-56
(or whatever) mod in and out of STL the last
few months. Last week saw one with a
bunch of Vee shapes on the vertical, but
couldn't read the name.

Any ideas who it is and if it is worth sending
them a resume?

Thanks,

Belch

Thats Murray Aviation out of YIP.... I heard they may be putting a class together for the -8 soon.

Thats all I got.....

Thanks T-gates!

I knew the one said something with a
m and Y on the tail, but too far away
to make out...

Now the real question...Are they a good
place to go to work for?

Wish I knew... As far as I know they are Part 125, and they have some reeeeeal old guys in the left seat. They also have CASA 212's, but I hear those are on the way out. I think if you do a search there is atleast one guy on the boards who was/is a 212 CA/DC8 FO for them... I think his handle is Speedbird1974.

Thinking about leaving CorpEx?

Belch...

This is off the RAA website:

Murray Aviation, Inc. (C)
835 Willow Run Airport, Ypsilanti, MI 48198
(734) 484-4800; Fax: (734) 484-4875
Website: murray-aviation.com
Mark A. Murray, President/Director-Operations; Preston Murray, C.F.O.; Charles Davis, Director-Maintenance; Steve Keene, Chief Pilot
Equipment: Cargo only: 2 CASA 212's,
2 Beech King Airs, 1 British Aerospace Jetstream 31

Hope this helps.

Out...

Hey all

Thanks for the help...going to send them a
resume. I really am a freightdog at heart,
and yes, right behind wishes for heath and
long life is the desire to find profitable
aviation employment. That would mean
vacating my position at corpex...what is
really funny is the bunch of fo's that see the
writing on the wall there and have left for
TSA, Pinnicle, CHQ and even PSA. Those
last few classes had some sharp people
in them!

Again, thanks for all the help, and I did a
search, but the thread that came up was
pretty old. Did find the websight and saw
the stc for cargo jetstreams...hmmm...
stretch 8's are cooler, but what the heck.
And the two flows ought to do a good job
taking care of the cockpit...I know they're
a little lame for the whole cabin!

See ya, got a resume to print!

Anyone know where the Albino 8's go from STL? Well, for that matter how many Murray has, what their route structure looks like, and if they take jumpseaters? I looked at their website and there is no mention of the 8's anywhere.

Per the FAA Part 125 Carriers cannot advertise thier aircraft or services. Don't ask me why, thats just what I have heard. As far as where they go, I see them in Laredo and all over the place. It's always auto-freight. If you search Airliners.net, there are pics of them in DFW and across the pond. So it seems like they operate them on-demand just like the rest of us.

It was interesting to see the cargo
jetstream mod on the website. Only
problem that I see is that there are
a bunch of 1900's out there that
already have a big door. Jetstream
is IMHO a tougher airframe though.

That's what makes them Part 125 instead of part 121. Part 121 is for common carriers. If you advertise to the general public, you are a common carrier. The upside to Part 125 is that there is a much, much smaller regulatory burden, the downside is that you have to do business in exclusive contracts or other forms of non-common carriage.

121

Actually, I believe Murray is going from a 125 certificate to a 121 certificate. I think the 125 was limiting what they could do with the airplanes (or limiting what they could legally).

Thus, the transition to 121. Like A Squared said, it's not just minor differences between the two.

Mabye thats why they're hiring (from what I hear). Because If I remember right, aren't some of the -8 captains waaaay over 60? I saw some of those guys and they looked pretty old and tired.

Quite likely, there is no age limit for Part 125, My company has a part 125 oeration and there's a captain and a co-pilot over 60 flying for the Part 125 side. Of course neither are eligible for for the Part 121 flying

Well, they have my resume by now...

Got to watch one of those DC-8's climb out
the other day from my spot on the rivers
2...IMHO one of the prettiest airliners ever
built.

Gotta wonder how those airbusses will be
doing when they get that mature!

My understanding is the diesel 8 has an unlimited lifetime airframe. I'm sure someone could elaborate. I'd love to go back and fly that pig.

Check again. Sadly, all of the classics now have life limits per SFAR. Unfortunately, most will not see the time/cycle limit but will be retired due to environmental reasons.

Once again the federal brain trust
thinks that it knows more about
airplanes than the engineers that
slaved over it with their pencils
and sliderules...

They have better things to do, like
getting the tsa to quit slowing up
the FFDO program!

Where are people like old man
Douglas, Ed Heinemann and the
that lot when you really need them?

The end of an era by government
fiat...what bull$hit!

The most I have seen at YIP is 3. 2 with the straight pipes and 1 with the CFM-56. The standard rumor I hear around the water cooler at my company is they do contract work for Chrysler. I guess that could be changing if they go 121. They also have a couple of the saab-340's there now too(in addition to the j-stream and the CASAs).-kingaira90

Correct, The DC-8 is double riveted in a bunch of places on the airframe that take most of the stress load. GREAT airplane

Current info?

Anyone know the current state of things a Murray Aviation? Pay (base & mileage, hours, what?). QOL. Do they hire street captains for the CASA, J-stream, or Saab? If so what kind of time would it take? Pay during training?

I read the past posts from a search. Looking for more recent info, and more details. Thanks. Batfish

While you're checking Murray, you can stop in and see Kalitta. They are hiring heavily there. I just finished my first week of ground school in YIP and so far, I like it a lot.

I got a friend who just got hired at Murray, street captain. Starts school today for the Saab and eventually cross training for the Jetstreams, all corporate shuttle for Chrysler. He says around three to four days off a week, he doesn't know much about the -8 though. At IFL Part 125 is all but gone, I think the FAA may be doing away with it industry wide...

What is your friend's time, ballpark? Did he have time in type? Have you heard anything about pay? Salary, base+mileage, garantee+mileage? Thanks, Batfish

I wish ;-)

If you are talking about Kalitta Air, I didn't think I had a snowball's chance in he!! of getting on with 2000tt and no turbine PIC. Would be cool though! Batfish

You might have a chance of getting an SO slot if you get your FE written done. They'll seat lock you for one year but then you can upgrade to the right seat.

Something for the noodle

I was focused on getting the 1000hrs of turbine PIC for the 10 year plan ;) . That gives me something to think about though.-batfish

I wonder how hireable then upgradeable they would think of someone who hasn't shown that they can cpt a smaller less complex a/c w/ crew? I know about the 900 hour chick rumor. If true I would put that into the abberation or had to get a female on property department, not the average hiring procedure.-batfish

Yeah, he already had a years experience from Shuttle America in the Saab, plus about 6000 hours...but still no word on pay/QOL
