They are in kind of a niche market, but everyone is subject to competition. Who do YOU think is their biggest competitor and why?

Alaska's biggest competitor?

I think the first two replies are probably the best from what I have heard. However, in terms of other airlines, it's hard to say. Alaska is vulnerable because a significant portion of their revenue comes from the Alaska routes.

I would say Southwest could make a play for at least some of those routes if they wanted to. Perhaps they could start first with SEA-ANC, SEA-FAI, MDW-ANC, or OAK-ANC, etc. Southwest was probably not entirely thrilled with Alaska throwing their political weight around to help nix the BFI deal and wouldn't mind an opportunity to pay them back.

The rumor-to-fruition gestation period in the Ayer Group is measured in decades. Air Group motto: "All things in due time, because we're a conservative corporation, and being conservative is, well, the conservative thing to do."

Look for SWA to announce OAK-ANC-BRW soon. BIG market.

The only problem with someone coming into Alaska (outside ANC) is we own most, if not all the infrastructure at the airports.

Unlikely. Alaksa is in a different class and I can't imagine what their pilot group would do. First paycuts then the Tranny?

Their management.

I know that MarkAir is gone, but MarkAir used the liberal bankruptcy laws to completely obliterate the Alaska marketplace. Look at Alaska Airlines before and after MarkAir.
I think that MarkAir still haunts Alaska from the grave.

Biggest competitor LUV. Due to some similar routes.

On a side note -- Alaska should start flying the Hawaii Routes themsevles rather than codesharing with NW and CO.

"New routes" would require some managerial talent. They don't have a shred. The only think these A-holes ever come up with is...screw the employees. Sorry but that doesn't win you any prizes. Any talentless assclown manager can make money if they steal it from the employees.

I have to say after riding on Alaska vs. Southwest I do believe the biggest competitor IS their management. They still have some of the nicest, most professional employees in the industry, but if they go the way that UAL and other airlines have gone in the past, and cut pay, benefits and work rules they could wind up with a very bitter dienchanted, employee group which = low, low morale = unhappy p.oed workers = poor customer service = not the same Alaska that I want to work for some day!

They truely are a classy airline with a good niche ( Dig-i-player for long flights, music over the PA while at the gate) but again they need to take care of the employees, and in return, their employees will take care of them and the airline!

Employees are a cost center that must be minimized. We are the enemy and that will never change as long as Bruce Kennedy is running this airline.

For those that don't know, he is on the BOD and was the CEO at one time. He hates pilots, unions and labor for that matter. Until he leaves and his cancerous attitude dies out, it will always be contentious and dysfunctional.

Sorry for the brief thread hijack, but heard someone in QX management recently say that Spero was asked to resign due to too slow progress in making changes. Does this make any sense? I'm sure there's more to the story: anyone know what it is?

From what I've seen slowness doesn't seem to be the culprit. From the rumormill, he didn't see eye to eye with his boss.

So in other words, he is probably a good dude? ;)

That's the sense I got.

I'll tell you, I had my doubts going into his assignment, but they quickly went away. I had to deal with him directly during a family emergency a couple of months ago. He heard about it, and called me at home. He said "Hi, this is Rob Spero calling for ---" I said "yes sir, this is he, what can I do for you?" His exact quote is "No, the question is what can I do for you?" I told him I was looking at getting on a particular flight that was pretty full. He said "You're on it, what else can I do?" He offered to pick me up at the airport, etc, etc.

All in all I was glad to have that support when it counted.

I am sad to see that it didn't work out because from my experiences, although limited, he seemed like a truly good dude that actually possessed some of that dying Alaska Spirit.

That would be like a Hezbollah cat hosting a Bible study and ice-cream social. I can see why he didn't fit in to the Err Grope's master plan.

You managed to work two of my favorite things into your post: ice cream and groping. Goodonya!
