The family is talking about a vacation in Alaska this summer -- what are the possibilities for renting an airplane there? I'm an ATP, CFI-CFII-MEI-CFIG, 5100TT, 300+ tailwheel, OAS low level waiver, with a little Alaska time (10 hrs??).

There was a thread on this a few years ago but I'd like current information. TIA.

Depends on what part of Alaska you are going to be visiting.

Here in Anchorage (Merrill Field, PAMR) you would be able to rent at Take Flight Alaska. They have Cessna 172's. I don't know what their requirements are, but I think to rent a plane you must do a check out flight and a written test.

By the way a check out flight with an instructor isn't a bad thing if you aren't familiar with the Anchorage Area Airspace. The airspace can be confusing if you have never flown through it.

If you have access to military bases the best place to rent a plane in Anchorage would be the Elmendorf Aero Club.

If your going up to the Fairbanks Area I dont believe there is anyone that will rent an aircraft for non-training flights.
