Straight from the chief pilots news letter:

I’ve been receiving many questions regarding the hiring program here at Alaska. Numbers, base assignment and movement between bases. We are going to be slightly revamping our selection process over the next few months. To better allow us the opportunity to review and interview the quality candidates for Alaska Airlines, I am suspending the Silver Bullet program effective April 1st. We have over 5800 applications on file and over 500 Silver Bullets. We need the time to work through those applications as I feel we owe it to those already on file to take a look at them and give them the consideration they deserve. I will be publishing the new requirements for interviewing within a couple of weeks.

Interviewing and hiring continues. The new Chief Pilot wants to develop his own recommedation system since the "Silver Bullet" program was the previous Chief Pilot's. All I read from that newsletter is that no new recommedations from pilots are being accepted until they come up with a new program. To say that Alaska is not "accepting applications" is incorrect. Go to the website and submit one if you are interested. The system will accept it.

Just be advised that they intend to process those currently in the Silver Bullet system first. By then, they will have in place whatever program the new Chief Pilot devises. Also, the total number they are throwing around is approximately 220 new hires between now and the end of '08.

With 179 retiring between 06 and 08 that's only 41 new positions. Of course that might be reduced in November when the retirement age is increased to 65.
Reserve for ever baby!!
I can't believe managament is actually telling newhires that they will upgrade within 5 years.
Trying to stay optimistic!

With only a 4 net gain in aircraft, that number of 41 new positions seems right...if not even a tad high.

5 years for new hires to upgrade?!? Would that be to upgrade off reserve?

Flx, if you read what he says "We have over 5800 applications on file and over 500 Silver Bullets. We need the time to work through those applications as I feel we owe it to those already on file to take a look at them and give them the consideration they deserve." Reality is that he is going to look at those first as in the all of them......and right now reserve in SEA is over 5 years for copilots and there is nothing in the future that is going to change that....

just a crappy job with crappy pay at a crappy little regional airline. of course if you are coming from Mesa/Mesaba/Skywest etc...or have a military retirement it probably looks like a shining star.........

Just under 300 retirements in the next 5 years. I may not be able to be a captain then and I've been here for 5 years already!

It would appear then that the current silver bullets will take care of all hiring through '08 and maybe beyond.

Tico,
What in the world are you talking about?

Oh yea and one more thing:::::any pilot hired post Kasher as far as the line pilots are concerned....You are part of the problem and will not be part of the solution.....

This has got to be the strangest thing I have ever heard. I am a line pilot, who works with other line pilots every month and I have never, ever heard anyone say anything about new hires being part of the problem. You could not be more wrong - new hires will most certainly be part of the solution - the only problem is we need a lot more of them than our company seems to be willing to hire!
It is a free country Tico, do us a favor and go find that "better" job if you think it is soooo bad here. I bet you are one of those SEA guys who whines all day and does everything you can think of to hurt the company. Heaven forbid you put in an honest days work, do your best to run things smoothly and efficiently, or maybe volunteer for your Union if you want to make things better. No you can't do that - that takes effort. It is easier to just make noise, hurt the company all you can and have a miserable life. I take it real personal when a fellow pilot is not giving 100%, because if you hurt this company you are hurting MY family. Don't jump on the box and whine about the paycut - I took 30% - but I know wages will come back someday. What we need now is to do everything in our power to make our company as strong as possible. PROFIT is the only way we will see upgrades and better wages. We need newhires bad and we need to welcome them into ALPA, not tell them they are part of some problem that you have cooked up in your mind. I might suggest counseling, but this may just be your character (or lack of).

I have no problem with new hires. They just need to be made aware that they're skills deserve a lot more money. I don't think too many guys will argue with that. We'll all be on the same page...for the most part.

O.K. Taco Tico, its a free country and a guy should be able to drink jug wine and post if he wants to.
