Your right it was a gravel strip, it has been a long time ago. I'll dig around in the garage I think I still have the sectional that I was using at the time. I always thought it was funny in Alaska every time you broke out a sectional, the passengers were horrified, I guess it meant that you didn't know your way around.

"The rest of the story..."

Get this:

Last weekend I attend the wedding and reception of a friend of mine that was a tower controller in BET.

There were several other pilots and controllers at the reception and we all partied, er, worked together at various times in the past.

Rumor has it Thomas Curwen (LA Times writer of the original artcle in question) actually supplied the booze and threw the party for the pilots he wrote about in the article.

Not exactly unethical (if it's true) in my opinion. But it kinda reminds you that when you see a guy in a turban burning a US flag you gotta wonder who supplied the flag, the gas and the match.

Caveat emptor and all that nonsense....

And the other sad thing is that the guy in the article who mentioned the marijuana thing.....The FAA went bonkers over that whole article, but yanked his medical for that previously undisclosed statement.

So the reporter got everyone drunk to get a better story, but got a pilot fired in the process. Not that I encourage marijuana use, but it's pretty sad that this "kid" got nailed.
