AirTran to keep growing at D/FW

AirTran Airways plans to continue to expand at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport this year, filling some of the void being left as Delta Air Lines shuts down its hub this month, an AirTran executive said Wednesday.

Kevin Healy, AirTran's vice president of planning, declined to name any specific new destinations being considered but said he expected decisions "sometime soon."

Healy said the Orlando, Fla.-based low-fare carrier is pleased with its growth at D/FW during the past 18 months.

"We've had slow but steady growth there," he said. "We've entered some of our largest markets now from D/FW."

AirTran is reviewing a $22 million incentive plan offered by D/FW executives last week. Under that deal, any airline that leases between 10 and 22 of the former Delta gates can receive free rent for a year and other financial perks.

"We're aware of the incentives, and we're talking to D/FW, just like we talk to all of our airports," he said. "Beyond that, I can't say anything."

By closing its hub at D/FW, Delta is cutting its daily flights to 21 from 254 and reducing the cities served to three from 66. It is also eliminating 3,600 jobs here.

AirTran has served the airport for more than a decade, starting with flights to its hub in Atlanta from a single gate. In 2003, the carrier added three gates and began expanding quickly, adding service to six airports including Las Vegas, Baltimore/Washington and Los Angeles.

Future expansion at D/FW appeared to be on hold late last year when AirTran proposed a deal to take over gates at Chicago's Midway Airport held by bankrupt ATA Airlines. Under that plan, AirTran would have created a large, mid-continent hub there and, some analysts believed, would have little reason for further growth at D/FW.

But the ATA proposal fell apart last month when a bankruptcy judge selected a competing plan from Dallas-based Southwest Airlines.

AirTran "lost an excellent growth opportunity" when it lost the bid, said airline analyst Ray Neidl of Calyon Securities in New York in a recent investment report.

AirTran has ambitious growth plans. The carrier will be adding 17 airplanes to its fleet in 2005, Healy said, and "we'll be adding a combination of new cities and new service between existing cities."

Some analysts have speculated that AirTran may be interested in using D/FW as a small hub to shuttle passengers from the East Coast to cities in the west.

With Midway out of the picture, analyst Neidl said, "there are ample other growth opportunities of which the carrier can take advantage."

AirTran: AAI, $8.87, down $0.13

DFW would have to grant them a caveat, as the deal offered was an immediate gratification deal. A minimum of 10 gates is required for the deal, which is a tremendous buildup in departures for AirTran, even over a period of 12 months. DFW will probably do that as they would like nothing better than sticking it to SWA after the snub and lobbying effort to repeal the Wrong Amendment.

pardon my lack of current events knowledge. What is the status of the SW lobby to repeal the Wright Amend.?

Yeah, those slow-taxiing, roll-out-to-the-end, taxi clearance-compliant AA guys don;t have a chance against the Corn Dog Conspiracy ;) .

Well said! But I'm sure that was meant for all of us who now find ourselves addicted to Flightinfo.com

Let's see, maybe someone can get us a phone # so we can call and get help. You know, like 1-800-BETS-OFF except a # exclusively for Flightinfo addicts...maybe the HIMS program could be extended to include us.

Who me? I..I..I don't have a problem. What's the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing you do before you go to bed?...OK, I check out Flightinfo.com, but that doesn't mean I have a problem,...does it?

I can see the commercial now...

I assuming you're talking about my 717? I was pretty depressed about that news since I really enjoy flying the plane. I've flown DC-9s, B-717s, and B-737/300s, and I'll try to be objective here. I think if the 717 had the FMS that was on the 737, it would be the best of the 3 (All things being just as they are now, give me a B-717 any day).

I liked the 737 alot, but I kinda felt wedged in the cockpit. Seems like the 717 was quieter too. Maybe it depends on whether you started flying DC products or Boeing products.

If you feel wedged in a 737, time to cut down on the snickers.

Are you from Pittsburgh? Just wondering, because your sarcasm reminds me of a friend of mine from High School...he's in jail now...

Have you been in a 717? What I'm getting at is that you can put your Jepps on top of your flightkit as opposed to opening up the binder and having to pull out sheets and stick them on the clipboard (or between the clipboard and the window). I just felt like I was alot closer to the side window (maybe it's just me).

I'm not talking about the seat itself...and no, I will NOT cut down on the Snickers. I'm guesing you haven't had a Snickers Blizzard at DQ recently. You have no idea what you're missing. I may die fat, but at least I'll die happy :)

You're kidding, right? The 737 CP ergonomics are the worst I've ever experienced in a transport. It's cramped, loud, the kitbag location is essentially behind the pilot, getting in and out of the seat requires the contortion of a 100lb gymnast. And no I'm not fat.

Thanks for the input. I think Canyon is one of those half-empty guys (and he must be 5' 9" and about 170 lbs if he thinks the 737 isn't cramped). I haven't heard alot of people posting about how spacious and quiet it is.

The 717 cockpit, believe it or not, is roomier. The fold-down table over your flight kit gives you a lot more useable room. The 737 seats are more comfortable, although there is definitely less space to occupy. . . . . but you adapt. It is also noisier, as someone pointed out.

The 717 has some nice features, and I think the V-NAV was more capable in today's ATC environment . . . it was a lot more difficult to land smoothly, though. The 737 lands like a twin Cessna. . . . a 125,000 lb twin Cessna. The fuel burns in the 737-700 are very similar to the 717, in fact, at some altitudes/weights they are actually less.

The 717 is a great airplane, but if we go all 737, it can only be a good thing for us in the long run.

Ty--You are absolutely right about the 717 landings. I flew it for about 3 years and can count the "roll on" landings on less than one hand. The 9 and 80 were much easier. I like your new avatar. The old one scared me... :p TC
