Been hearing that one for 6 years now. Looks like something may happen before the end of the year. Most likely MCO and then BWI might be a possibility. If merger does happen with Midwest, then of course MKE and possibly Kansas City, If Airtran adds all the flying out of MCI as they said they would.

BWI/PHL/NYC/BOS and MCO/TPA and a few other cities were offered as virtual /satelite bases including MIA/FLL, DFW and MDW right around the time we opened negotiations for our contract, however the union nixed the idea right from the start.

See they all live in ATL and couldn't care less about the rest of us that commute (last figured I heard was about 70% of the pilots).

Virtual bases are nothing but a Pandora's Box. Don't fall for it unless you want to see here today gone tomarrow satellite bases all over the country just like RyanAir in Europe.

Make it a Real base with Real base protections and Real base infrastructure...or don't make it one at all.

Yeah tell that to the spirit guys. I here they are closing DTW and correct me if I'm wrong but thats a real base for them. and another thing thing this virtual bases = virtual rules crap is the stupidest fuking thing ever. Seems to work great for the FA's in MCO. They may not like the way the company goes from month to month changing the lines, reserves and some of the other things that they do, but you know what at the end of the day or at the end of the trip they are back home and I havn't heard of any that have bid out of it.

Virtual bases work and they work great, all you have to do is sit down and work out an agreement with the company. MOre than likely they will wind up opening up real crew bases simply because it's costing too much $$$ for layovers that we have a lot of crew overnighting. i.e. MCO and BWI..

Was in BWI a couple weeks ago. Talked to an Airtran ops employee. She said that Mx moved out of their location under the concourse and construction just began on a pilot/Fa crewroom. She wasn't sure of a crew base but confirmed that we will have a large crewroom shortly.

Yea then us atlanta based folks will have crappier schedules and you will get nice day trip turns....Not fair

Hey Max,

That is always the number one reason that the NPA and other pilots use that are against virtual bases. Boo Hoo it will take flying away from ATL.. Not this virtual base=virtual rules stuff. That's just a crutch and nothing more. Do you think most guys give a sh!t one way or the other about other bases, virtual or not.. they just dont want to see the flying go away from ATL.. Guess what? it wont. Do you think that Airtran will really give up any flying out of ATL, especially since they worked so hard to get the extra gates at D. All airplanes coming in are additions to, not replacing anything.

The guys on the 717 are getting crappier schedules as it is. I'm a 9 year Capt. About 2 years ago I could get what I wanted, when I wanted and where I wanted.. not any more. But that is just part of the growth and having one crew base will do that. I could always bid over to the 737, hell I'd be about number 40 there, but I don't want to. Not yet anyway. Opening up even one more base somewhere will increase productivity, and make better schedules for all.. mark my words..

Anyone hearing about a merger with SWA?

Yeah were buying them next after this Midwest thing is done.

Nope same sh1t we here all the time... let's see what's the latest

1. Southwest is buying Airtran
2. Airtran is buying Frontier
3. Frontier and jetBlue are merging
4. United and CO are merging
5. Delta and NW are merging
6. Aeroflot is buying AA
7. Airtran and Alaska are merging
8. Airtran, Alaska, Jetblue, Spirit, Midex and Frontier are merging

Man, pretty soon it will just say "AIRLINE" on the side of the airplanes...
