AirTran Airways will offer direct flights from Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee to Indianapolis and Pittsburgh beginning Oct. 6, the airline is to announce Wednesday.
AirTran also plans to add a daily flight to its Milwaukee-Denver schedule, said Kevin Healy, senior vice president of planning and marketing for the carrier in Orlando, Fla.
The non-stop flights to Indianapolis and Pittsburgh will serve mainly business travelers, Healy said. The flights are to be on 117-seat Boeing 717 jets and 137-seat Boeing 737s.
Oak Creek-based Midwest Airlines is the only carrier that offers non-stop flights from Milwaukee to Indianapolis and Pittsburgh. Midwest flies to Indianapolis on 37- and 50-seat regional jets four times daily, and it flies to Pittsburgh on 50-seat regional jets and 76-seat Embraer 170 jets three times daily.
AirTran also will resume its seasonal non-stop service from Milwaukee to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Phoenix on Nov. 19, Healy said.
With the additional flights, AirTran will offer up to 36 daily non-stop flights from Milwaukee to 19 destinations.
Midwest remains the largest carrier at Mitchell, with up to 100 daily departures to 33 cities during its peak summer schedule.
In May, Midwest held a 37.5% market share at Mitchell, according to airport data, and AirTran had a 20.2% market share. Delta Air Lines/Northwest Airlines, which are merging their operations under the Delta name, posted a market share of 21.9%.
Midwest announced in June that it would be sold to Indianapolis-based Republic Airways Holdings Inc., which plans to add flights from Milwaukee.

While I question the viability of the PIT market, it does appear it's getting interesting between AAI and RAH. AAI looks to me right now like a simmering volcano, waiting for any turnaround in the economy to shift into an aggressive marketing mode once again.

I don't think PIT will be worth their time...probably won't last too long. Loads are low on that route. IND is a good move though.
