Airnet has been kind of dead on here lately. Thankfully it's slowly being revived again.

I took earlier advice back in Dec/Jan when I only had some 400hrs. I got more hours (900tt) under my belt now and am getting that feeling I got when I asked my wife on our first date. My wife and I keep going back and forth over the pro's and con's, namely that Monday evening through Friday morning we will only see each other on a passing basis. However we both agree that getting Friday Evening through Monday morning together is far better than what we have going on now.

So I'm looking for a little more advice. What's the current feeling on jump seating to work? My wife has an excellent job that's holding us over through all my transitions. Now is not the right time for us to give that job up. I've read on the web site that commuting is not recommended, and that Airnet prefers us to live where our planes live. Is Airnet in a position to consider such a candidate?

I'm sure Craig is the best persons to talk to, but before I do I wanted to get an idea from the forum.

I'm in the same situation my friend. My wife has the good paying job and we have a house already. After alot of talks I have decided to do the commuting thing. Moving around and chasing different base options is good for the single guys who can just pack up there cars and go wherever there based at. I would not move my wife around the country for this reason. I do however live close to a major airport with alot of options of getting to work. Remember, at Airnet your going to be bidding on different stations and equipment all over the country basically whenever you want to upgrade. It all comes down to personal choice.

I have commuted since I got hired about a year ago. I have been based in both MEM and AGC. I've never had any trouble but I would make a few recommendations.

First try to get a run that is based at the primary 121 airport in that city. Many of our runs are based at satellite airports and you are stuck trying to get back and forth and park, etc. I was based at AGC and had to jumpseat in and out of PIT which was tough. We are based at MEM and life is mich simpler.

Try to avoid multi leg commutes if possible. My commute to PIT stopped at CVG. Each time you get off there is a chance you may not get back on. My commute to MEM is one way with multiple flights each day.

All in all commuting has worked out for me. I'm definitely ready to not be commuting but I wouldn't discourage anyone from doing it.

Who can you all jumseat with?

Holy crap. Are we talking about jumpseating EVERY DAY to work or just for the beginning and end of the work week? Either way I'd probably develop a life threatening ulcer and pull all my hair out. I can barely stand jumpseating every few months. Between wondering if the ticket counter can give me a gate pass or the TSA will actually honor my crew ID, dealing with the TSA in general, gate agents who don't want to take the time to look your company up, ridiculous delays, crowds of whiny sick ignorant passengers, and rolling the dice on getting an open seat.....I'd go crazy!

I would seriously consider, and i mean SERIOUSLY CONSIDER, not talking about commuting during the interview.... several recent trainees have washed out or quit due to family issues, about being gone and not able to get home regularly.... and it amounts to wasted time, effort, and money on the part of the training dept. when that happens, and they are apparently sensitive about and it MAY influence a hiring decision.... So i would suggest to you that say you are willing to move anywhere and not mention the travel during the interview process and only when you have made it to the line, plan what bases you are interested in and sort out the getting home to the family.... but take nothing for granted, i am working with a guy that has been trying to bid a base close to home for months to no avail, unless he finally got it last night.... good luck, hope this helps....

The web site now says that Airnet will hire to bases in some circumstances. Do you know of people actually being hired to a base? Which bases would be likely?

i heard they were going to hire in bases and mentioned TEB specifically..... but as far as i know, no one has been hired into a specific base....
