When reading the salaries of the different airlines, is year 1 captain just that or is time counted from initial hire. I know that airlines do not hire captains...If you upgrade to captain after 8 years, do you go to the bottom of the next column or just slide over?

That is a negotiated "slide", so to speak. It could also be considered industry standard, but you have to get that in your contract. If you have it, great. At the outfit I'm at now you go back to first year pay on the captain side of the ledger. We fought and fought, but lost that battle, but won some significant others that are actually better than what I had at my past pre-furlough airline.
