In response, Northwest announced non-stop service between New York and Dallas, a major American market. How did this all play out?

AA is famous for moves like this one.
DL and AA had a handshake agreement that DL would not grow DFW. DL eventually pulls out of DFW completely, and what does AA do? They add JFK-ATL service. Its all monkey see monkey do! Then you must, in management, give yourself a bonus for thinking of such ingenious ideas!
