Did anybody else receive an email from airline apps stating that their free membership was about to expire, and to pay the membership fee in order to keep your application active? Thanks.

That is not a shocker. Seems like you get one free yr and then need to pay. The most interesting part of it is finding out how you are gonna deal with the LORs that you have in your account. Gonna pony up the membership money or ask your letter writers to go through the effort again so you can save some coin.

Charging an application fee is illegal is most states. To get around that, they simply make it a convenience fee. In this case, it's pretty convenient to keep your letters of recommendation!
