I was just down in Bande Aceh, Indonesia delivering relief supplies. One of the american military ground handlers told me a story, and am looking for confirmation.
According to him, there were airline crews in crew rest in some of the hotels on the beach when the tsunami hit. They are now among the casaulties. In addition to the tragedy of losing aviation brethren this way, it left the airport with a problem. There weren't crews to move the jets off the ramp, so they couldn't get more planes in with supplies. (MOG'ed-out in mil-airlift speak) This lasted several days while the airlines attempted to confirm the status of the crews, then send replacement crews down to clear off the ramp.
Anyone know if this is true? How many crew members were lost? What airlines/countries were affected? I haven't heard anything else along these lines, but it's certainly plausible.
