I need to get a Cessna 172 from the US over to the UK. Now, I've been told that ferrying the thing over is pretty expensive, and pretty dangerous too (go figure!)

I was wondering if anyone knew how much it'd cost to have the wings taken off, put in a container and have it shipped from East Coast US, to a port here in the UK?? Anyone know who can do this and how much it'd cost?? And also, if anyone has a clue to how much it'd cost to have the aircraft 'airworthy' again when the wings are put on here again??

All help appreciated.

I think the going rate for a container across is 5K. Any decent A/P should be able to pull the
wings off. I knew a couple of guys who did it themselves, they were not A/P.

Call one of the big shipping lines or a consolidator, they should be able to point you in
the right direction.

Or you could call a ferry company, to find out how much it will cost, maybe less than you think.

PS. Here you go, I was close. http://www.discount-shipping.net/containers/east_containers.html

It is pretty much a toss up in price, ferrying/versus shipping if you factor the insurance for ferrying, if you are not insuring, then ferrying is cheaper. Putting it into a container involves more than just removing the wings and tail, the landing gear must be removed also and proper cradles built, I have done it both ways, and ferrying is my preferred choice. Either way, you will need an export CofA and proper customs documentation. If it is to remain on the N registry in the UK, only an FAA A+P log entry is required after reinstallation of parts removed for containerization
