Our callsign is "Wisconsin". Thats what we are taught in training and what most of us use on the radio (I might use AirShuttle if i've just done something stupid :) ). On their screen ATC sees us as AWIxxxx which is why at least once every day I get called "Cactus xxxx" since America West shows up as AWAxxxx to ATC. The controllers refer to us as Air Wisconsin at least half of the time. I went and looked it up in their glossary (there is a link to that around here somewhere) and our callsign is actually listed as "Air Wisconsin" but we dont use it. I know that Cheesehead has a nice ring to it but I try to minimize its use...

That makes sense.

Anyone know the story behind waterski and TSA?

A couple of guys got it right about waterskiing in the Ozark Mountains...to add to that, when the company started way back when it only flew to the "Waterski Resort." They inherited the name of the resort and it stuck all these years.

In other news, I heard that ACA had registered the callsign "Independence" several years ago and actually used to call themselves Independence on the radio before they switched to Blue Ridge. Any idea if this is true and if so why did they stop?

ACA never had Independence as a call sign, but that is one of the calls we are being polled on now at our company web site. Before Blue Ridge there was Shasta and one other, but that was back when I was using "Wisconsin". I think the other one was Sundance, I could be wrong, but those two were used for a short time when ACA was still a division of WestAir.

Proud Mudder, AKA ValAir...

I thought the Waterski callsign had to do with Hulas and his facination with WSking or something. Well what do I know.
