Air Controller Busted In Crack Cocaine Ring

An air traffic controller suspected of making drug deals on the job is among those who have been arrested in a large metro drug bust. She remains behind bars caught in the sweep of an alleged crack cocaine drug. In all, federal authorities charged 21 people during the drug bust. One of the suspects worked as an air traffic controller. Now, she's under investigation for selling drugs from the control tower. On Friday, federal and local authorities revealed names and photos of suspects still on the loose. They're accused of distributing millions of dollars worth of cocaine throughout metro Denver. Now, NEWS4 is learning more about one particular suspect, NEWS4 investigator Rick Sallinger reports.

On Friday, the FBI, the DEA, and a variety of local authorities announced a pre-dawn raid had rounded up more than a dozen members of crack cocaine ring. Many of those arrested were believed affiliated with the Crenshaw Mafia Gangster Bloods street gang. But one of those indicted held a job where the use of drugs could endanger many lives -- an air traffic controller. At the Jefferson County Airport Control Tower, takeoffs and landings are managed for one of Colorado's busiest general aviation airports. Now, it appears there is evidence one of those charged in last week's bust of a crack cocaine ring may have been arranging drug deals from the airport tower. NEWS4 has learned the investigation has determined that air traffic controller Kimberly Kenyon was making calls from the control tower to a person believed to be to her drug dealer. The purpose was to allegedly make buys of crack cocaine. Authorities involved in the probe say the FAA was notified that she was under investigation. Kenyon was taken off controlling duties and put on a desk job. Investigators are trying to learn if she was given a drug test to see if she had any crack cocaine her system. Authorities are also attempting to determine if Kenyon was later returned to controlling duties.

Kenyon and her husband Michael live in an Arvada home that was searched by federal authorities on Friday following their arrests. It's not known what if anything was recovered related to the investigation. Investigators were earlier trying to determine if Kenyon may have been working the control tower the night of the recent mid-air collision. The FAA says she was removed from that job when placed under investigation and has not been recertified to resume air traffic control duties. Kenyon is to appear at a bond hearing later this week.

You know if it weren't for the fact that one of the people was in ATC it wouldn't have even made the news.

Thank God it wasn't a pilot. We'd be done for.

Maybe it will deflect some attention from us (for maybe 10 seconds).
