A380 Clips Another At JFK

Taxiing Jumbo Jet Clips Other Plane at JFK Airport

Tom McElroy
AP
NEW YORK -- A wing of an Airbus A380, the world's biggest commercial passenger jet, clipped the tail of another plane while taxiing out to depart John F. Kennedy International Airport on Monday night.

There were no injuries when the Air France super jumbo jet touched the other plane at 8:09 p.m., Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Jim Peters said.

Air France Flight 7, bound for Paris, was taxiing on a runway when its left wingtip struck the tail of Comair Flight 6293, which had just landed from Boston and was taxiing to its gate at Kennedy, one of the nation's busiest airports, Peters said.

Both jets were being towed to a ramp area for inspection, Peters said. The extent of the damage was unknown.

The FAA didn't immediately say how many people were on the double-deck Airbus A380, which can carry 525 passengers in a three-class configuration or more than 850 in a single-class configuration.

The Comair CRJ 700 Regional Jet was carrying 62 passengers and four crew members, said Betsy Talton, a spokeswoman of Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines Inc., for which Comair operates regional flights. All the passengers were taken off the plane and into a terminal, she said.

The most serious safety scare for the world's largest and newest jetliners occurred last year, when a Rolls-Royce engine on a Qantas A380 disintegrated shortly after takeoff from Singapore, prompting Qantas to temporarily ground its fleet. A preliminary report blamed the massive engine failure on an oil leak.

On the NYC news, they are playing the ATC transcipts. The AF pilot is blaming the RJ for being "parked illegally".

Wasn't there, didn't see it, but, parked properly or not, the 380 was moving and if in doubt should have stopped...

video shows the crj getting spun 45 degrees in about 1 second. whoops

Crj's position was established (not moving) and that cockpit was turned away from the A380. Don't know if it was a blind turn for the 380 but unless it was it was AF's fault.

An aircraft of that size should be escorted to the runway by ground crews. Would have stopped this accident. Must be too expensive.

That's one way to enforce a scope clause. Thanks, AF.

Like I said in the thread that got tossed to the Foreign Forum -

Air France, doing what DAL ALPA can't.

Maybe A380 guys can get "RJ Killer" stickers made up for their flight bags.

It looks like more damage was done to the 380 than the rj. sounds like the rj guys should be getting "A380 Killer" stickers. Ill bet the rj could have flown after the accident- the 380, not so much.

Wow from the video I saw I bet the Rj is a total loss. I bet it bent/ twisted the back of the airplane that they say its not worth fixing. But well see???

I just wonder how many aboard the RJ had...in spite of the seat belt sign...went from sitting un-belted ready to leap up into the aisle to doing their best Superman impression in the cabin!!!!

Interesting how the Air France crew was quick to say the Comair plane was parked "illegally"!

Looking at the video, the A380 didn't even slow up.

Both crews are going to get blamed and they are going to "Arm Chair QB" this thing to death!

I bet only one of those planes gets fixed, and the other goes to the scrap yard. The owner though (DL) may get some insurance money.

OYS

The key word there is "parked". As in it wasn't moving. Air France just bought themselves a trashed RJ. I wonder if the NY D.A.'s office will file criminal charges against the 380 crew like the French did to the Continental mechanic.

I wonder if the airport authority is not ending up being in the hot seat. As far as I remember staying on taxiway centerline guarantees you (wingtip) clearance of all obstacles. If the CRJ was indeed parked at a marked position, and the AF A380 was on centerline then it is time to take out the popcorn.

Regarding the French criminal case against CO, you do know that some "southern-style engineering" was applied to the DC-10, don't you?

You as the pilot are ALWAYS responsible for your aircraft. That AF captain is totally at fault.

Also, has anyone else noticed how fast that AF appears to be going?
