A friend of a friend of a friend told me that the crew of the RJ was going to be pinned with this incident.
Can someone please explain this to me?

Yea, size matters.

A wise old Captain told me he was involved in a similar incident, not quite as bad. The authorities tried to pin in on him (turboprop commuter) by saying that he was not stopped on the centerline of the taxiway when he was struck by a larger taxiing aircraft.

After he was hit he called the control tower and asked the controller to announce on the tape that he/she observed an accident and that his aircraft appeared to be on the taxiway centerline. This saved his bacon in court. A good lesson in CYA. If it happens to you things get hectic, he said. Take your time and take care of your pax and crew, then CYA.
