Air Canada has filed for bankruptcy Protection under the Companies' Creditor Arrangement Act (CCAA). The CCAA is very similar to Chapter 11 that exists in the United States. All this does is allow the airline to restructure itself with the protection that assets (aircraft etc.) not be seized.
