We fly at night, before the sun comes up an after it goes down, but not for too long. Contrary to popular belief, there is instrument weather here, missed approaches and the whole nine yards. You better be instrument proficient before heading into the sim. Our training is very thorough (ground school included) and the Dash sim (like all) is touchy and unforgiving. Don't let the preponderece of Aloha shirts lull you into believing that its a laid back company. Its a pro 121 outfit all the way, just small. At least 1, sometimes 2 out of a class of 8 wash out. We even had a class with greater than 50% failure rate.
As far as upgrades, its anyone's guess. Aloha-HAL merger failure and decline of Japanese tourism post 9-11 has thrown old patterns out the window. Six Capts are in a pool with Aloha waiting for them to recall 4 more furloees before resuming new hire classes. Rumors and common sense indicate that this will happen in the near future with Aloha possibly expanding its mainland routes, but absolutely nothing has been released that is difinitive on the subject. So we are all waiting. If things return to normal, then yes expect 4-6 mos reserve (20 day sked) and aboout 2 yrs to upgrade.
