They said on the NBC national news last night that although the FAA is supporting the age 65 rule, it may take two years to implement.

Has anyone heard about how long it would take to change the law and become the new rule?

That's the extreme, but it typically takes a while.

There's a process where they file the NPRM (Notice of Proposed Rule Making), then a period of comment anywhere up to several months.

Then, if it's really contentious, they can hold public hearings, then a 2nd period of comment before the final rule comes out.

Then, bear in mind, the COMPANIES have to have time to figure out how to implement it with union contracts, longevity pay scales, retirement medical insurance issues...

It's a MESS, and probably at least a year away.

I think back to the FAR 91 Subpart K NPRM. That was like swimming in glue, and I believe they changed administrators in middle also.

The NPRM is not supposed to come out until the 2nd half of the year. The FAA stated themselves that it typically takes 18-24 months from NPRM to rule, I think 2 years total is a conservative period....

FAA Will Propose Pilot Retirement Age of 65
The FAA announced today that it intends "later this year" to issue a formal notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) to increase the mandatory airline pilot retirement age from 60 to 65. The planned proposal follows several other recent related actions. Although an FAA-established panel of airline, labor and medical experts failed to reach a consensus, in response to a request for comments on the issue, the overwhelming majority of the more than 5,700 respondents were in support of increasing the mandatory age limit. The NPRM seeks to adopt the new International Civil Aviation Organization standard that allows one pilot up to age 65 provided the other pilot is under age 60. A formal rulemaking process is expected to take from 18 to 24 months, and if the age increase is adopted, as is expected, the FAA said there would be no retroactive provisions. One of the first organizations to go on record supporting the change was the Flight Safety Foundation, saying, "Raising the mandatory retirement age to 65 does not present any safety concerns, provided all pilots continue to have their health monitored through regular physicals."

Came off of AIN email.

Not sure if two years is long enough for the membership to get poltically savvy and envoke majority rules change....
