Went to the cty tax office to pay my annual property taxes for '06 (ouch!). The guy next to me was getting a discount because he was age 65 so I inquired about this discount, the so-called "age-65 exepmtion". When the clerk was done explaining it to me, I politely asked her to please apply said discount to my property accounts. After looking at me like I needed pshychological help she started to laugh. I replied with total seriousness to go ahead and give me the same discount on the grounds that it is age-discrimination and asked to see the County Tax Collector. All of the "elder" people in the room seemed confused as the clerks gathered around to study this opposition to what I deemed very obvious age-discrimination.
I refused to budge unless the discount was applied to my tax bill on the ground of age discrimination. Eventually a manager explained to me that this is because people age 65 and older are economically stricken and need help from the county on their tax bills. "You mean that guy down the street from me who is 71 yrs old and worth over $10,000,000 with a $1,000,000 home (he made his money as a structural engineer)? That guy is hurting and needs help?" I went on to tell him only people with bonafide economic reasons ought to be considered for tax discounts. To do so purely on age is discriminatory.
Eventually, had to pay my FULL TAX bill and move on, as I knew would be the only outsome that day, but I was trying to make a point nontheless. You can't very well claim age-discrimination, regarding the FAA age-60 law, then strive for all the "senior" discounts that society affords you. I mean, if you really felt age-60 was discriminating, where were you on this topic and what did you do about it throughout your career when you were 25, 30, 35, 40, 50 and 55? Did you oppose it then? Or did you just have this ephiphany that its age-discimination once you turned 57, 58 or 59 (once all those senior to you were now conveniently out of your way)?
Age-discrimination you say? Fine, I will claim age-dicrimination every where I see it when a senior citizen gets a discount based on his or her age. And you seniors should be happy for this becuase I will equally proclaim that insurance companies should not be allowed to charge you higher premimiums for your age. Sound fair?
Flame away....suckaz.
