FYI: This was posted in the majors board....it probably affects our futures the most.

AGE 60 LEGISLATIVE ALERT: As many of you are aware, U.S. Representative James Gibbons (R-NV-2), a retired Delta Air Lines pilot, recently introduced House Resolution (H.R.) 65, a bill to amend the age restrictions for pilots. According to our Washington, D.C.-based government relations advisors, Representative Gibbons has stated that he 'hasn't heard from many pilots who oppose raising the retirement age' and plans to proceed with his legislation. Our advisors further report that Representative Gibbons intends to attach his legislation to whatever Social Security reform bill Congress produces.

We need all pilots who oppose changing the Age 60 Rule to contact Representative Gibbons to express your views.

You can reach Representative Gibbons via telephone at 202-225-6155 and via fax at 202-225-5679. You can send him an e-mail via the following address: [email protected]

Thanks I will tell'em what a good idea it is to match the 135 retirement

I too thank you for bringing this to our attention. Here is what I wrote:

"I support HR 65.

If one were to consider the safety record of pilots at age of 60-65 against that of those under the age of 60 doing the same type of flying, I strongly suspect that the older pilots would do as well if not better than the younger pilots. I have read one such study that showed safety improved with age until 65-69. At that point, the rates went up but were still below the 55-59 rates. There is NO basis in safety for the current age 60 cut-off."

Andy....Bailout....,

count me in....that makes 3 of us

Dear Sir,

I support your bill, but with a few changes. Might I suggest the following:

1. NO mandatory retirement age, as long as the pilot can still pass a physical and prove that he is still of sound mind and judgment. This would be similar to the bill regarding 100+ year old drivers in Florida.

2. Raise the age requirement of the ATP to 35, and make it a requirement to be US Citizen to get one.

Thank you very much for your concern. I appreciate your efforts and will be supportive if a few more teeth are added to the legislation.

Sincerely,

Xxxxxx Xxxxx

Have any of you read the In Focus where the CO$T of the medical will be paid by the individual?

Has anyone in the FAA stated what the new medical requirements are? Do any of you know that the FAA can change the medical requirements without any legislative input or union approval? Will airlines lower the insurance coverage and raise premiums on those who fly past sixty, think cost analysis.

Congress can be lobbied to pass the law(ie. Shivo) those that adminster the new law can set it up to be as restrictive or lienient as they want it(ie.TSA)

Be aware of what you wish for and look at all sides before deciding. My .02, just a few things I'm looking at

Please fill out the ALPA survey and let your MEC know which way you would like them to vote.

Do you really want to work until you are 65? I would prefer to call it quits at 60.

There is no supporting evidence that pilots are more or less safe after 60. Less than fifty percent will be able to hold a medical anyway.

The only reason there is a push for this now is because most of the pensions are shot and these guys have no plan B for retirement.

No, I don't really "want to work until I'm 65", but I also think it'll be pretty tough to retire from this industry at 60 as every airline races to cut benefits and pay... then there's the ever increasing age before you can collect social security benefits! Maybe once you've been flying a few more years the "realities" of this industry will become more obvious to you too!!

i would prefer to retire tomarrow.... but i really like my current lifestyle :)

If this thing passes, you better want to work long past 60 because all the good jobs will be held on to by the old foggies.

I say he11 no to this bill! Notice no one cared until the old guys started losing their pensions. If you think it is tough to get a job at a major now, just wait until all pilots get another 5 years to work. Plus they could end up passing stricter medical requirements that affect us all.

This bill is crap and there is no reason to pass it. Say no.

It is time to change the age 60 rule, If you can pass a First Class Medical than you should be able to fly. Changing it benefits ALL of us, we will one day (hopefully) be 60 as well, no one group is benefitting over the other. Not everyone will want to work past age 60 and not everyone will be able to (medically). There will be far less folks flying past age 60 than you may think. It just gets harder to hold that First Class as you age. Some of us will and some of us won't. However, we should all have the opportunity to do so.

Well I'd have to agree with the majority of these posts so far. If any of you ever come across the story of how the age was set to 60 it might make you think twice about letting the corruption continue. Although raising the age will cause me to stay in the regionals for a few more years it'll mean a better life in the long run. There are numerous pilots forced into retirement taking up jobs as flight instructors to supplement their income to make ends meet. My dreams are still haunted with screams of GO-AROUND! And the occasional RIGHT RUDDER! If I have the chance to retire without re-living those dreams I say let's do it.

Nobody on this board will ever see a pension...unless you alread have one...and even then it will probably gone by the time you retire.

Why do people keep talking about "working until 65"?

The currently proposed legislation WILL NOT raise the retirement age to 65. It will raise the age to each individual pilot's SS retirement age which is AT LEAST 66 for every currently employed US airline pilot. For those of us who will not reach our 45th birthday during 2005 the retirement age would be 67!

Greetings..

I hate to say it, but being able to pass ann FAA medical exam is in general not a descent measure of ones health. Now if someone had to pass a physical from their family doc that would be different. I personnally dont plan to work past 60, at least for the airlines anyway. I figure if I can last in this industry the way it is now without strangling someone I will be doing good. I am sure I will work past 60 doing something but I doubt it will be flying. Plus I already work 2 jobs as it is.

Take care

I wrote in. I am against changing this rule. Everyone who signed up to fly 121 knew what the retirement age was and needed to plan accordingly. Swithching the retirement age now will only be benificial to the minority.

The rules have been changing for the 35+ years I have been in this business. People have planned, only to have the rug pulled out from under them. The change will not only benefit the MAJORITY, it will benefit ALL in the long run.

Be careful what you wish for. Took a phone survey from ALPA the other week. Do realize that if they raise the retirement age, one of the things that will also change will be a more stringent medical that affects us all.
