How long does it take to get a training date once you get selected for a Guard or Reserve slot (for prior service pilots)? I've heard up to six months. Is it unit dependent? What if the unit was seriously undermanned? Would it be sooner?

Also, does anyone know if the following units are looking for people?:
* 124th Wing in Boise (C-130s)
* 85th Wing in Sioux City (transitioning to KC-135)
* not sure of wing # in Portland (also heard it was transitioning to other aircraft)
* KC-135 Reserve unit in McConnell
* KC-135 guard unit in Topeka

Baseops.net has some of this info, but you don't really get a flavor of how many they need/over or under-manned, etc.

I would try to talk to the contact at McConnell, he will give you the particulars. The posting at Baseops.net should give you the contact information. I think they are always looking for qualified individuals.

Bluto,

For Navy guys switching to USAFR or ANG, I'd guess 3-5 months to do all the conversion paperwork/medical stuff and get your new commision assuming you don't get held up along the way. I'm sure it's much shorter for AF folks. The units can't put you on the list for a training slot until you're "officially" in, so you'll have another wait after getting the new commission. Some training pipelines are more backed up than others, the wait to go to training once you're in will vary. You can put yourself on a list for short-notice calls for the schools when a slot opens up so it is possible to get in before your scheduled class date. I don't know how much your unit's manning affects your class dates, but I'd be surprised if it matters.

If you're looking for slots, I'd advise doing it quickly. I've had two about-to-be-furloughed friends call me up looking for help getting into my unit in the last month alone, and I'm not even really in the unit yet.

I started the process in Sep. but due to a med waiver it's taking forever, looks like it will be several more months before I can get my name on the list for Little Rock. I've heard there's a pretty long (6 months?) wait for the Rock, can anyone confirm that?

On the plus side, if Little Rock is backed up enough maybe I'll get to go to Keesler and go through the new J-model course. Of course, the casino's could be very dangerous to my per diem checks...

Good luck.

Bluto, I dropped you a PM, but here is some more stuff.

the plain truth is, you have to dig up phone numbers, call the units and talk to the "Ops Group Commander" or whoever is in charge of Officer accessions (if you don't want to bug the OGC), and ask. It is a pain to find out the info on the units, but well worth it. I got a Guard unit list and started using "google" to find out phone numbers.

I have a bunch of the phone numbers for F-16/F-15 units if you want them.

I actually interviewed with the 85th..when they transferred from F-16s to 135s...drop me a PM if you want to know more...
