I work for a 91/135 operation flying a Hawker 850XP w/ Collins Pro 21 with a paperless cockpit(AFIS), we carry JEPP HI/LO charts for back up,and NOAA approach plates also.

My question is ,are you legal to fly a 135 trip if your NOAA approach charts are out of date, but your AFIS charts & approach plates,Nav data bases are current?

Thanks for any input.

I'm 99 percent sure you still need updated charts.

Like X-wind said though, read your operations manual.

Thx Guys , Dont Have Op Specs @ Home ,i'm Sure Thats What They Read, will Check Tommorro When I Get To The Hangar

In addition to reading your Op Specs manual you should read your avionics manual too. It's IFIS not AFIS.

Integrated Flight Information System (IFIS)

Good one!

Good one!

If you are approved by your OPS Specs to have Electronic approach plates and they are current. You do not need other approach plates. You might and probably do need Hi/Lo Charts regardless!

Also if you have only one IFIS display you might then need paperback up, depending on your POI approval.

The paperless cockpit feature is driven by the FSU (File Server Unit). As I understand it, it consists of a computer drive that stores the approach plate data. Standard equipment includes one FSU, with a second FSU as an option (around $70,000, I think). There is no easy way to tell how many FSU's you have by looking at your avionics or displays. When I was in LIT a few weeks ago, the only way the Hawker Beech mech could tell was by looking to see if I had circuit breakers installed for FSU #2.

According to the HB chief test pilot, his research says that for part 91 ops, 1 FSU is technically legal, although he doesn't know of anyone going paperless with only 1 FSU. The previous aircraft I flew was an 850 with 2 FSU's, and we flew totally paperless (part 91). I am currently flying a 900XP with one FSU, and we are carrying an EFB as backup.

Under 135, I agree that it depends on your opspecs and poi.

Happy Trails

To use ProLine 21 IFIS for Part 135 you need to have Op Spec A061. You would also need 2 EFB (or in the case of the 800XP, 2 File Server Units). You may have approval for a single FSU and a seperate EFB depending on your POI. If the e-charts are current you still need paper enroute hi/lo, but would not need the NACO plates (provided you are fully approved for paperless under 135). Paper enroute charts are stil required for everyone. I think that Jepp JUST got approval for elec. enroute charts with the ProLine Fusion (I'm a little vague on the facts).

You can look to see if you have 2 FSU through the FMS (something like Index -> DBU Info -> LSU Avail) You will see something like FSU1 and FSU2 in addition to a few others.

yes you will need a061 (i think) in your ops spes to reflect ifis approval, you will need 2 file servers, and you will also still need to carry the enroute charts.
