Maybe Im old school, but a mother belongs home to raise young kids, and a dad needs to make it happen. aviation or not.

A trailer park is no place to raise a child man, not for the "love of flying". How safe is your wife and kid going to be while you tool around at goddam Great Lakes for $12/hr.

You asked for opinions....and mine is that you are Gen X ("me") and 100% out of your noggin.

aiiight...so you have a home and the wife is going to stay home and raise the kids. excellent. No other way if you ask me.

The time to "play pilot" is when you have no responsibility...Im just confused as to how you can do this with a family? do you have a 6 figure savings? Im guessing NO as you were considering putting money on a CREDIT CARD to get signed off to tow banners!

GEN X is reference to the bizarre mentality displayed by a whole group of individuals that nothing matters but "me". They blame others, thier parents, management, whoever, for not "giving" them things. They put aside lifes responsibilitys to pursue stupid dreams (airline pilot maybe) that pay nothing. It dosen't matter becuase they dont want to regret anything later like their parents did.....they walk around airports looking like slobs in Doc Maartens and Ipods - their response - "pay me like a professional and maybe I'll act like one"....

we all know where that has gotten them.

Im not saying this is you, it was just sounding that way. A father and husband does not leave a mom at home to travel, play pilot, and make 15K a year -- at least not in my mind.

A better plan IMHO? - put off the kid for 2-3 years, have the wife work hard and bank every check in savings...see where the pilot thing leads....maybe you will wind up at a job where you can get by on your check and supplement with her savings for the first few lean baby years...

again, just advice, I know I can come across as a complete douchebag (thats my trademark here!)...but I have done the baby thing on one income. Its 100% worth it, but its not easy, and its NOT possible on those salary numbers. Hope that helps.

My friend, sorry about all the red letters in my previous post. I was just trying to say what G200 was saying. I think it is great you want kids and all, but i find it kind of wierd to "pick a time " to have them. Let the boss above take care of that one.

Why would a pilot be wearing Doc Martins?

It seems like if a pilot can only make 12-15K a year then they would definetly be working part time and have no other option. Is that the airlines or 135/91 when starting? I'd rather take $20 and hour and put in at least 30 hrs a week. I think that would be around 30g or something a year. Now while my wife's pregnant she'll work 6 months out of the 9. That would be when I would hold on to a $12 an hour job to put in some time and build more experience.

I don't think I'm following you there. Who's paying for their training? I guess you could be referring to banner tow/tail wheel training? Please elaborate.

Oh, and BTW, I have chosen option #4 for now.

4. Start working at home at a strange little 141 flight school with a small student base that might give me a few more students and return to my hotel job (bellman) part-time to maintain benefits.

I figure I've got all this time on my hands so I might as well give it a go down at this part 141 Cessna Pilot Center where I have to wear a full fledged pilot uniform with stripes on the shoulder, name tag and all. They want me to buy the uniform, they want me to come hangout for free to pick up students that drop by for info, and they say they'll help me out with the CFII and MEI if I do a good job (I'll be a subcontracted employee that recieves 1099's). They're also imposing a timeline on me to be done with students from my old flight school. Cost of training at the new place - 110 an hour for the plane if you have a prepay account, 120 other wise. 50 for ground/flight instruction, 45 if using prepay account. Cost of 141 kit $299. So cost of training for my students would be 155 to 170 and hour in a new 172SP with KLN-94 (bendix/king) GPS nav. system and full autopilot.
Would someone mind giving me a little input on how typical or untypical this school may be considering what they're asking of me.
I kind of feel like I might be tooling myself out a little but I won't know until after I work there a couple months. I recieve 20/hour to start after my 10 hour probation period that pays $10/hour.
I have to take a check ride with them tommorow morning (and that I have to pay for!)
