Hi, hey do you have any cool anecdotes of your job at the hotel? ever been invited by some swingers couple to plya, or saw something hot going on? hehehhe

HMR - I'm really not that interested in Ag flying at this point but I'm quite attracted to that kind of flying (have a guy in my family that does it). I love to fly and I'm a bit of a hotdog but that is some SERIOUSLY dangerous work and it's unhealthy considering all the chemicals and fatigue with pulling those g's for hours on end.

Bellman stories Fern.? Are you serious? Let's see - Travis Tritt recently stiffed me and so did the guy who played Roscoe Peeko'train on Dukes of Haz. Took a bunch of swingers to the big suite one night (2 gay guys and 2 lesbians) and they started getting naked right there in front of me so I split. Walked away from the door once when Jeb Bush and wife were approaching. I don't hate him or anything, I just wanted to see what would happed. I got written up! That job will really rip your soul out and smash it on the ground sometimes but the money's great. I loved it for first couple of years but it catches up with you quickly. Most all the girls working there were a bunch of sluts and would get it on in the parking lot or in closests, empty rooms, etc...I wasn't one of those people but I did meet my wife there!

I could use some advice. Here's the abbreviated sum up. (take into account my wife and I are trying to have kids right now, we own a sweet house in AVL, and...oh yeah, only money would be credit card ~10%apr)

I can't decide:

1. Take $4,000 - $5000 to Atlanta's ATP flight school to get my CFII and MEI and then go where ever.

2. Take $1,800 - $3,400 to Conway S.C. for training to fly banners over Myrtle Beach for season beginning end of March.

3. Take my wife with me out west to work at a flight school that offers health insurance IF I can convince them to hire me (i.e. - MAPD)

4. Start working at home at a strange little 141 flight school with a small student base that might give me a few more students and return to my hotel job (bellman) part-time to maintain benefits.

The first two options leave us w/o health insurance so we would have to buy it privately.
I was considering training to tow banners in Florida but after reading some info I decided that southern Florida would be a little straining for me and my wife. Cost of living too high w/ pay too low. Myrtle Beach on the other hand is only 5-6 hours away from my home and I'll probably just get a travel trailer if I go. I have some folks trying to talk me out of towing due to lack of building X-C and instrument time.

Lay it on me! (advice that is, or just pick a #1 - 4)
Thanks.

did you say use a credit card??!!

You said you and your wife are trying to have kids now but the only source of a few G's you have is a Credit Card????

dont even think about it. that ~10% interest can go to ~20% the first time you miss a payment, etc...baby arrives, cant pay credit card....then what?

for flight training? no way, run away now.

Do the CFI/bellman job until you qualify for a better job. You can likely get your CFII for free at that school, and an MEI is a waste IMHO. You dont need to spend money to advance in aviation. Most that do advance to crappy jobs from my observation.

keep the job that actually pays you a paycheck, pocket those tips from doorman job, and save up for your kid. Your priorites are about to change drastically. You need healthcare - and you cant afford to buy your own at any of those jobs you describe. Its gotta cost 25K to have a healthy baby today...with insurance...$0

Not to be harsh, but better yet, wrap your pecker and buy the wife a goldfish to keep her busy until you can afford a kid.

Geeze, where should I go with this? How about I copy/paste from another forum below to give a bigger picture here:

Do Not Have Kids until you do!
MyGod, you could have $100K or more in medical bills in a year if anything happens during pregnancy or later. Do you want the best medical care for them?
Trust me, my step-daughter and her husband learned this the hard way. She got sick and they didn't have any health insurance. They lost darn near everything a year after they were married. (and lost their insurance)

Yes, I have health insurance. I do a seasonal layoff every year for Jan, Feb, and March. I prepay the cost of the insurance for those months so I'm good until March 31st.
Don't worry, my head's on straight most of the time!

That is very sad about your step-daughter. 1st thing I'd do if I were them/him is go get a job at the U.S. postal service or a department store (Sears) or something. They usually offer great benefits and are easy jobs to get.

I appreciate all advice. Bad, negative, good, positive - whatever!
Please, keep it comin' folks. My brain's like a sponge right now.

DON'T have that kid NOW. Seriously dude. Think about what's best for that child, and NOT what you and the wife WANT.
You're right that you'll never find an "ideal" time to have children, but set up some goals that you've met first. Such as having a job with insurance bennies.

Thanks, good advice as well, and I take it with an open mind. Remember, IMHO, what is best for the child is that the mom stays home until the kid goes to school. Daycare is very bad. Also, I always have my hotel job to come back to with bennies and I do know of a few instruction jobs that I qualify for that provide bennies out in AZ, NM.

DAYUM! That's funnier n'hell.

HEY DARLIN COME HERE!! LOOK WHAT THIS GUY JUST WROTE!

Awesome advice regarding everything else Gulfstream200. I think I am scratching the MEI idea. I'll worry about CFII only if the 141 school calls back. I was told to stay very persistant with them, and have called back once already, so if they're not calling me then screw'em. There won't be enough flying there anyway.
I'm leaning towards towing banners today. I just need my tailwheel end. and $1800 in cash and a travel trailer. That's more my style anyway.

Hmmm? Now where do I get a travel trailer and $1800 in cash?

By the way everyone. If I could just get a low end 135 job that gives me decent benefits out of Charlotte for a little more than 10 bucks and hour, I'd see it as great success.
Do you know that the hotel I've been working for takes 70 something dollars A WEEK out of my pay check to cover the cost of United Health Care and Dental!?

cry me a river man, I work for a Fortune X company and they take $400 a month out of my check! they pay me pretty well, yes, but its still $4800 a year!

echo that at 90% of employers today.

Yeah, I figured that was the case. My benies cover me, my wife, and one kid that doesn't exist yet so I guess 280 a month isn't that bad.
Do you have kids?

Get aggressive. Write letters with resumes to Great Lakes, Colgan all those type of operators, they will hire very lowtime guys if you are motivated. The key words......AGGRESSIVE and MOTIVATED.

Good luck

I'm workin' on that perfect resume right now but take into account, I only have 6 hrs of multi pic. No matter how aggressive and motivated I am, wouldn't that completely discount me?

no offense, but with 410 hrs you are a bit shy of getting any flying job that will pay enough to live on.

Just fly a lot, get 1500 and your ATP. No reason you cant bang out 1000 hrs in a year. No flying near you....ummm...MOVE.

Just dont do anything stupid like have kids until you settle in a bit somewhere. Even at a good flying job its work to keep a family happy and paid, nevermind as a CFI or something...

Dont set up your own train wreck - flyings not worth it, not even close.

Thanks, I'll take the advice, except my wife and I agreed long ago that we would try and have a kid in a very specific time frame even if it puts us in the trailer park. I know it's pretty crazy and seems irresponsible but I pretty much plan on being well below the poverty line with our 1st baby. My wife is in training to do "Etiquette training for children." She chose that as something fulfilling to do that she believes will make her a good bit of money while she has a baby and allows her to work out of the home (strange I know)
I will never give up on flying. I have a B.S. and a B.A. degree and have a few other talents but flying is "it". It's what I chose long ago. I know flying is not worth the train wreck but I'm a goal oriented guy and taking on the challenge is half of it. When everyone tries to steer me clear of flying or having kids I imagine/substitue another profession for it....i.e. - Don't have kids if you plan on being a public school teacher, policeman, firefighter, priest, social worker, etc.... Do you see what I mean. It can be done, just not easily.
Anyway, enough of pep talking myself.

I was just looking at the minimums for Great Lakes AL and it's 750 TT with 50 hrs multi. That's low as hell right? Especially the 50. They must pay their FO like 10g a year or something. I'm not really familiar with all these companies. Everyone I've heard of I learned from this forum. Could someone please explain/fill me on the big picture regarding these companies with such low mins.
What other companies are similar?

Good luck with that.

Maybe Im old school, but a mother belongs home to raise young kids, and a dad needs to make it happen. aviation or not.

A trailer park is no place to raise a child man, not for the "love of flying". How safe is your wife and kid going to be while you tool around at goddam Great Lakes for $12/hr.

You asked for opinions....and mine is that you are Gen X ("me") and 100% out of your noggin.
