this is pretty stupid, but anyone have any suggestions on how to stop smoking? or any support for that matter...

Go visit a cancer center and talk to some folks that didnt quit.

enough said, that's the best suggestion i ever heard...i'll let you all know when i beat this thing...
 
You can have all the support, help, etc, in the world but until you are ready to make the choice to quit then it will not be much help. People seem to quit for all the wrong reasons, most people that I see are trying to quit to make others happy (usually does not work)... You need to realize what smoking is doing to your body and that should be reason enough in itself for you to want to quit.

I quit in airborne school eons ago. The running made it easy to quit.

If you can't find a cancer center, go meet some people with emphysema.

Most importantly, once you quit, stay out of bars for awhile. That is where I have seen most people relapse. You might even quit drinking (if you do drink) for awhile too.
 
Good luck. I literally live right next to an American Cancer Society Hope Lodge and it amazes me the number of people outside that place that are smoking cigs. For those not familiar, this is a housing complex for people waiting for cancer treatment, and they're still sucking away on cancer sticks.

As a non-smoker I can only imagine how addicting these things must be. But I shake my head when I see this. :(
 
what I dont get is that cigs are like 6$ a freakin pack!!

I'm coming up on 12 years of non-smoking.

I didn't do it through faith. I wasn't saved.

I didn't do it to please anyone.

I had two reasons. One, I had been doing it for quite a while, and I wanted to get back into the shape that allowed me to run a few miles.

Two, I spent most of my life paying leass than $1 a pack, and a few years paying betweeen $1 and $2 a pack. When they first went over $3 a pack, I started to question the economics of something that brought so little to me in return.

I used the three step nicotine patch to help me quit. Back then, it was a prescription. I am convinced it kept me out of prison, because I might have killed someone during those first few weeks. :D

You are gonna LOVE how good barbecue will taste!!!!
 
You might even quit drinking (if you do drink) for awhile too.

It is not just for smokers anymore

I never smoked or drank and still got the stuff. In remission now so that is good. The point is that while tobacco certainly leads to many ccancer cases, it is not the only route.

Different people need different approaches to quit. If you need to see the direct result of smoking as a stimulus to quit, find some dark black lungs or a scrawny heart to look at. If you need to see the economic side, put away the money that you would have spent on your habit into a fund and buy a sailboat, car, or airplane in a few years. If you need to see why you should stop so that you can be around awhile, carry around picures of your loved ones. If you just want to be around so that you can see sunsets get a picture of that and carry with you. If you need a more physical stimulus, put a rubber band around your wrist that you can snap when you get the urge to light up. Even better, if you have the cooperation of a campanion, use those cat-o-nine tails to reduce the urge and have some real fun at the same time!!

I quit cold turkey on Jan. 31, 1987 after smoking 40 years. My only regret is that everything started tasting good & my sense of smell was enhanced. I have put on 15 pounds since then. Now if I could just control my appetite---------
 
You could be like my old boss, he was walking across the road to his barn and was out of breath before he got to the road. He said FU** it, tossed out his cigarette's and has smoked for the past 5 years. If you have the will power you can quit.
 
Like everyone else has said, you have to do it for you. I quit May, 1998. It wasn't easy. I used Nicorette gum. This might not work for you, be willing to try anything. If you have ever met anyone with emphezma, that should really make you stop.

There is not just the physical addiction side to stopping. There is also a psychological side as well. Not smoking anymore is like loosing a friend. Cig's are something you have probably had with you for a long time. You had to make time to smoke, you looked forward to smoking and it was good. Breaking old habits of when you would smoke is hard. For example: with that first cup of coffee in the morning, driving, after sex. Each time you get to one of these important times, you have to make a consciece effort to not smoke. Remember, if you have that one cigerete, you will no longer be a non-smoker! Good luck, there are many ex-smokers in this world. Use them to help YOU become a former smoker as well.
 
Oh man, I usually just read here...but this is a thread I can comment on.

I went surfing. The waves were big and I was a kook. All of a sudden I was pinned to the reef, on my back. I needed to BREATHE NOW, but was still in the grip of the ocean.

Next day I woke up and started my routine: pee, drink of water, roll a Drum cigarette. My tobacco was kind of dry and stale. I looked at the cigarette I had just rolled and just thought, 'I don't want this anymore'.

That was in 1993, I haven't smoked since.

Part of it for me was believing that surfing and smoking were irreconcilable. I wanted to surf more than I wanted to smoke. Truth was, surfing or not...I wanted the non-smokers lifestyle more than the smokers lifestyle.

Good luck. Remember that the first week or so is the hardest. After that it starts to mellow out and by the time you get 30 days or so, the craving is gone.
 
Nothing like a cool, refreshing Laramie in the morning! Sorry, I couldn't resist the Simpson's reference! Seriously, good advice in the posts. The key is you. I bought a pack one day, had a few and just stopped. I still have an occasional cigar but that's another thread! Good luck and enjoy breathing easier!
 
it's been two days...i have massive head aces, is this normal? please comment on this...oh and hey i'm stopping smoking cause it's not good for you...but drinking...come on, if it stop drinking i'll never meet a good looking girl again...:D
 
Its really simple....if you were like me when i smoked I went through roughly three packs a week, broken down to a pack every couple days. So add things up....comes out to be about 12-14 dolllars a week. Anyway, determine how much money you spend on cigs a week and put that money in a piggy bank. At the end of the month take the money out and spend it on something you want....just not cigarettes...

You would be surprised how much you can actually save...
