What is the process for getting a UPT slot in Active Duty? Is there any chance of being selected for a spot before actually being obligated? To explain a little better, I'm not real keen on going out and joining with the hope that I might, maybe get a spot. Any comments would be quite helpfull.

The short answer is yes -- talk to an officer recruiter. The procedure is that you'll be approved for and assigned to your specialty prior to ever signing on the dotted line. If your recruiter tries to feed you a line about going into another career field and then applying for UPT, haul a$$ and find another.
Good luck,
Z
