ARLINGTON, Va. -- US Airways officials say an employee has been killed in an accident at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Airline spokesman David Castelveter said the accident happened at about 6:30 a.m. at Gate 23.

He said a woman was believed to be driving a belt loader up to a US Airways Express plane bound for Chicago when she became pinned between the belt loader and the plane.

Castelveter said the woman was a fleet service agent but he did not release her name or say how long she had worked for the airline.

The flight has been canceled as part of the investigation, Castelveter said.

It's not known if any passengers saw the accident.

Castelveter said the accident is under investigation by the airline and the National Transportation Safety Board.

Woman Operating Belt Loader Pinned Against Plane

A US Airways fleet service agent was killed at Reagan National Airport early
Tuesday when the belt loader she was operating somehow pinned her against an aircraft, crushing her.

Authorities had not released the woman's name as of late Tuesday morning. A
spokesman for US Airways said she was operating the belt loader at about
0630, some 30-minutes before Flight 1821 was to leave DCA for Chicago.
Somehow, in the process of loading bags onto the Embraer RJ, the woman
became trapped between the machinery and the aircraft.

The NTSB is investigating the mishap. The flight was canceled -- passengers
were transferred to another aircraft.

Well, if the aircraft was an Airbus, the accident would not have happened because it stands taller on its landing gear and is therefore safer and able to look down upon other aircraft.

Yes. A ramp worker walked into the moving prop of a Piedmont Dash-8, I think it was July of 02.

Yes, A Piedmont Dash 8 hit a ramper and killed him when he went to move some chocks after the airplane was already under its own power.

It was a MidAtlantic ramp worker. She drove the beltloader into the side of one of our 170's and was crushed (wedged) between the fuselage and the ramploader. I was there shortly after it happened. I know the FO and the Capt, they were onboard when the accident happened. They felt/herd the loarder hit the plane and the Capt rushed out to find the result. It sounds like she died on impact.

From hearsay around the ramp she was pretty new (a few months) and was a single mother of 2 (the last sentance is what I was told around the ramp).

The Piedmont accident that some are referring too happened in the summer (July or August) 2001, I want to say July if I remember correctly. The ramper had removed the chalks from the front wheel of the Dash and tossed them off the the left of the plane (if you were looking at the dash standing infront). The chalks did not go far and were in the track of the right side main gear on the Dash so he ran to pick them up and move them further off to the side but as he ran foward and bent down to pick up the chalks he kept going fwd and ran bent over into prop which had just been taken out of "start-feather". The dash had not yet moved. The result was not pretty.

someone can always find out who he is and kick the s*it out of him. sounds like he needs it for that comment. i would love to hear him say that with a face behind his words. BTW the only thing good that comes out of france is its women.

There is a memorial fund being set up to help her two children who are now on their own. The details are posted in the Washington DC crew room.
 
How about someone finding out some info about the fund for those of us who don't make it up to DCA very often?

1/Memorial trust fund in honor of Yolanda Corbett

The loss of our fellow employee Yolanda Corbett at
Reagan National Airport on Tuesday has deeply touched
many of you, as well as some of our customers who
learned of this terrible accident through media
reports. The outreach to help Yolanda's two daughters
ages 11 and 12, and other members of her family, has
been extraordinary.

Over the past few days, US Airways has taken the steps
to set up a Trust Fund account for the children. The
Yolanda Corbett Memorial Trust Fund has now been
established to help support Yolanda's daughters.
US Airways has contributed $20,000 -- $10,000 for each
child -- to the fund, which is being handled through
Wachovia Bank.

Standley Brady, a US Airways Fleet Service Agent at
Reagan National Airport, also began collecting money
to help support the Corbett family members. He has
been instrumental in coordinating this gesture of good
will. America West employees also expressed their
desire to donate.

"Our employees have been working closely with
Yolanda's family during this difficult time, and the
family has conveyed their appreciation for the efforts
and expressions of sympathy so many US Airways
employees have shown," said Senior Vice President of
Corporate Affairs Chris Chiames.

Employees desiring to contribute to the Fund may send
checks (made payable to the Yolanda Corbett Memorial
Trust Fund) to Wachovia Bank, Attention Evelyn
Scarborough, 1300 I St., NW, 12th Floor, Washington,
D.C. 20005. Donations also can be made at any
Wachovia branch.
