This can happen with external AC carts, especially the broken down ones they use at the cheap-a$$ airlines most of us fly at. It has happened to me. I left the jet for a few minutes, came back, and there was a nice exhaust smell lingering....like the smell of a 70s era car or truck exhaust. A lot of this old equipment still uses old Ford V8 engines and the like.
