WHITE PLAINS - Hundreds of passengers had their flights delayed today at Westchester County Airport, after a private jet returning from Bermuda skidded off the only runway.
There were no injuries in the accident, but the airport suspended flights after the 9:48 a.m. incident, leaving a crowd of travelers stranded in the terminal indefinitely.
"We just have to get the plane out of the turf," said John Starace, operations manager.
The plane, a Grumman G200 Galaxy, held six passengers and two pilots. It had landed from Bermuda this morning, then slipped off the runway while taxying toward the customs hanger, getting stuck in the mud.
As of noon, two tow trucks were working to pull the aircraft from the mud. Airplanes cannot back up, and their wheels have no traction, so the trucks are placing straps around the wheels and gingerly pulling it backwards.
Most arrivals have been canceled and no flights are scheduled to depart before 1 p.m.
This quote just takes the cake.. "Airplanes cannot back up, and their wheels have no traction"
