Tonight is the last scheduled DC9 flights for ABX / DHL.

The Germans have done in a few short years what it took over 25 to build, it is a sad day for all..........

Hey, the ...germans 'aint all that bad. I have their car....8 years old....150 grand on the tach...never breaks, won't rot, and is NICE ride....

When Detroit can do that, a crap-load of our problems will be solved!

It's been coming for a long time now, but it still smarts to see it happen. Sorry to hear it, Box. An earlier thread mentioned 157 layoffs on Feb. 16 - are those folks still on the payroll at least until then? Hope so.

Best of luck guys and gals.

Different group of Germans. I am pretty sure he does not mean the whole German race. No need to drift the thread to engineering, beer or sausage making.

Sorry to hear it guys, this is truly the end of an era in Wilmington.

Oh, by the way, 78 F250 running strong.

I have a 1955 VW Beetle, all original still going. Blows a little smoke and oil, but thats allright. Not bad for a dispossable car.

I used to swing wrenches at ABX, one of the best places I have ever worked.

Wanna sell that Beetle?

Sad for all concerned in ILN...best o luck

Having flown those DC-9's in the past, and having way too many friends screwed over by inept DHL management, this is beyond sad. :(

They had really big DHL boxes lined up by the doors. You had to climb in and they would tape it up and ship you home. They did let you take ONLY ONE bottle of water, which promptly froze. Sadly, I have learned that many of the boxes were left sitting on the ramp all weekend due to a mid-level DHL manager deciding that it was far too cold to ship anything, and that the "customer" could indeed just wait for his package when DHL decided to get it there.
Letters to the relatives are being Fedexed as we speak and will be in their hands by Monday at 10:30, far ahead of when the actual frozen corspe will make it...
ABX mgmt has decided that since they have passed on "in transit" that the death benefits due them will have to be negotiated with 1224, and be tied into the new contract signing.
They are letting them keep their uniforms on for burial.
A sad day at ABX, loved the -9, it was the airplane that made me want to become a pilot in the first place, Allegheny Airlines jet service to MCO, dad took me into the cockpit, early 1970's, I just loved all those switches and dials...never did figure out what they all meant anyway.

Has nothing to do with it. Your just an idiot with a keyboard.

one thing about flying old airplanes, makes you look at beer cans in a different way. One day your drinking a bud, look down at the can and you will see a scratch, and you might even see a little yellow paint.

Lighten up.

The last flight of the 9 for abx means a lot of people start losing their jobs. Mechanics, secretaries, and even janitors. All self centered pilots that only think about themselves will eventually get jobs. Whether its corporate, or overseas. Pilots are generally resourceful. But there is a lot of unskilled laber that is just hosed. Think about those people.

Thats what is sad.

Who cares about the old airplanes.

There is a lot to be said about an old aircraft. That's why I fly planes that my grandfather flew. It's sad about the 9s My dad spent many years flying sideways for you guys until those went. I always wanted to fly for ABX someday, hopefully I will still get the chance.
Good Luck to all.

Yeah, after all these years my dream machine is still a DC...3.

Douglas made some solid aircraft, the 9 is an amazing machine. I sure would love to have a -10 series to rocket around in.

I also enjoyed my time on the 8, that was like working in a museum.

Well, amazing is a poor choice of words. Probably "solid" is better. Kind of like my Toyota pickup, it's a simple, rugged airplane with decent performance and good handling. The -10 series was a hoot, with it's light weight you could zip up to altitude and then fall out of the sky at a 2:1 ratio. I liked it's handling best, too.

They're not fast and, of course, they're very inefficient compared to a Bus or the latest 737. But I think they were a very good value, they made money for a lot of airlines, including Airborne Express.

Maybe I'm just a sucker, I've eventually fallen in love with every airplane that I spent more than 2000 hours in.

The 9 was a very forgiving airplane, unlike the 8, if you got fast or high, not a problem. X wind never a problem, it had it's bad points as does any airplane, but it was better than most...plus when they actually pay you a decent wage to fly it, well that actually makes it a great airplane.
