ABX Air Purchases Eleven Boeing 767 Aircraft from Delta Air Lines

WILMINGTON, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 7, 2005--ABX Air (NASDAQ:ABXA) announced today that it has committed to purchase eleven Boeing 767-200 passenger aircraft from Delta Air Lines. The aircraft are in addition to the one Boeing 767-200 aircraft that ABX Air purchased and took delivery of from Delta Air Lines in July 2005.



The agreement calls for ABX Air to take delivery of six of the eleven aircraft in calendar year 2006, two in 2007 and three in 2008, with payment due upon the delivery of each aircraft.

ABX Air will use a combination of borrowed and internally generated cash flows to purchase and modify all eleven aircraft for approximately $190 million.

The Company anticipates that Israel Aircraft Industries Ltd. will modify the aircraft from passenger to freighter configuration. The modification will include the installation of a standard cargo door and an increase of the maximum takeoff weight to 351,000 lbs. The last of the eleven aircraft is expected to be in service in the fourth quarter of 2008.

"The Boeing 767-200 freighter has proven to be an extremely reliable and cost effective medium widebody aircraft," said Joe Hete, President & CEO of ABX Air. "The acquisition and modification of these aircraft will permit us to grow our non-DHL air cargo operations and further diversify our revenue base."

ABX Air, Inc. is a cargo airline with a fleet of 116 in-service aircraft that operates out of Wilmington, Ohio, and 18 hubs throughout the United States. ABX Air became an independent public company effective August 16, 2003, as a result of the separation from its former parent company, Airborne, Inc., which was acquired by DHL Worldwide Express B.V. In addition to providing airlift capacity and sort center staffing to DHL Express (USA), Inc., ABX Air provides charter and maintenance services to a diverse group of customers. With over 9,000 employees, ABX Air is the largest employer in a several county area in southwestern Ohio.
 
Now here's the rest of the story. The newly purchased ex-Delta 767's are NOT going to be commited to DHL flying. They are strictly destined for ad-hoc charter out of MIA. This is further proof of ABX's slide into the depths of being just another ACMI bottom feeder.

The proof is in the pay.

IHaveAPension: When does the pay get reduced to reflect what you're claiming?

Additionally, vis-a-vis the type of flying ABX is currently doing for DHL, they stand to make more in outside ACMI flying than they'd otherwise earn. E.g., ACM flying.

Just remember what Hete said in a recent crew meeting. He said that for future contract comparison purposes, he no longer considered FedEx or UPS to be ABX's peers. He now considers Kalitta, Kitty Hawk, Expressnet, CAT, Arrow, etc. ABX's new peers. That only means one thing, he intends to bring your contract down to those levels. You may have your head buried in the sand now, but don't take my word for it, ask around. Ask D. Graves what Hete's grand plan is for ABX. He will tell you the truth if you don't believe me.
 
Honest answers and info only please

Hey Fellas. I was interested in finding out more info on ABX and the type of flying they are doing. Does anyone have time to post some info on schedules, pay, commuting, mangement, and quality of life there. I would really like to avoid bashing and fighting. Its great to hear some companies are growing in these times, and still paying a decent wage. Thanks in advance.

ABX still has pilots on furlough with no plans to recall them at all. It's is irrelevant to get info about ABX because they will NOT be hiring any pilots for quite a long time. And by the time they do get around to hire anybody, their contract they have at the time will not in any way resemble what they have now. Per Joe Hete.
 
DHL Air's Early Arrival
DHL is on track for a September launch of its new U.S. air hub, but it still must improve its ground operations, according to the company's parent company Deutsche Post.

DHL's Wilmington, Ohio, air hub is under budget and on schedule to open in mid-September, a month earlier than originally planned.

Designed to rationalize DHL's two existing U.S. air networks, the hub is a key component in its U.S. turnaround strategy, DHL Express Joint CEO John Mullen said. The million-square-foot facility will have 124 jet ramp parking capacity and will be able to handle 455,000 pieces per hour or 1.7 million pieces per night. DHL also is eliminating redundancies in its hub and air networks that will see its air fleet reduced from 256 to 90 by October.
Deutsche Post also said DHL reached better than 97 percent on-time delivery for all products.
Despite the good news, DHL said it still needs to weed out unprofitable delivery operations and push its U.S. ground operations to achieve the same performance as the air division.

Last month, the company took a step towards improving its ground service when it began constructing its East Coast distribution facility in Allentown, Pa. DHL plans to use the $107 million, 290,000-square-foot facility, one of 19 new ground sort centers in the United States, as its hub for surface delivery in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states.

The site will be devoted entirely to truck operations, which DHL said it believes will anchor its domestic express growth. DHL said the facility would open in September 2006.
